Chaturmas 2026: A Time of Divine Rest

Chaturmas 2026: In the Hindu calendar, Devshayani Ekadashi is observed on the *Ekadashi* (eleventh day) of the bright fortnight (*Shukla Paksha*) in the month of Ashadha. This significant day marks the beginning of Chaturmas, a period during which Lord Vishnu enters a state of *Yog Nidra* (divine slumber) for four months. This raises the question: where does Lord Vishnu rest during this time, and when does He awaken? There is a fascinating legend that explains this.

The Resting Place of Lord Vishnu

Where does Lord Vishnu sleep for four months?
During Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu departs from His heavenly realm and descends to *Patal Loka* (the netherworld). Here, He remains in *Yog Nidra* at the palace of King Bali. In His Vaman *avatar* (incarnation), Lord Vishnu had previously claimed everything from King Bali in three strides, including the heavens and the earth. Pleased with Bali, He appointed him as the ruler of *Patal Loka*, instructing him to remain there until the end of *Kaliyuga*.

King Bali's Wish and Lord Vishnu's Boon

Upon receiving this command, King Bali expressed a desire to see Lord Vishnu every day upon waking and to be protected from his enemies. Lord Vishnu granted this wish and accompanied him to *Patal Loka*.

Meanwhile, in *Vaikuntha Loka* (the celestial abode), Goddess Lakshmi awaited Lord Vishnu's return. Concerned by His prolonged absence, she and the other deities sought answers. Narada Muni explained the situation and suggested a plan to bring Lord Vishnu back from *Patal Loka*.

Goddess Lakshmi's Intervention

Following Narada Muni's advice, Goddess Lakshmi approached King Bali in *Patal Loka*. She accepted him as her brother and secured a promise from him to allow Lord Vishnu to return to *Vaikuntha Loka*.

King Bali then released Lord Vishnu from His vow, permitting Him to go back to *Vaikuntha*. However, Lord Vishnu informed King Bali that He would remain in *Patal Loka* for four months, which is why every year during Chaturmas, He resides there.

The Awakening of Lord Vishnu

Lord Vishnu will emerge from Yog Nidra on this day.
Chaturmas concludes with Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, also known as Devutthana Ekadashi. On this day, Lord Vishnu awakens from His divine slumber and resumes His role in governing the universe.
