Understanding Breast Cancer: Causes, Risks, and Innovative Treatments
Overview of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer ranks among the most prevalent cancers affecting women. This condition arises when breast cells begin to multiply uncontrollably, forming tumors. If not addressed early, it can lead to severe consequences. Various symptoms and risk factors contribute to the swift escalation of this disease among women. A recent investigation by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) highlights that insufficient sleep, elevated stress levels, and obesity are significant contributors to breast cancer.
Insights from the ICMR Study
Findings of the ICMR Research
As reported by a leading news outlet, a comprehensive study by the ICMR–National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research reveals that the surge in breast cancer cases in India is primarily due to inadequate sleep, rising stress, and abdominal obesity. The research predicts an annual increase of 5.6 percent in breast cancer cases, leading to around 50,000 new diagnoses each year.
This extensive study reviewed Indian research published until December 22, 2024, to pinpoint the primary risk factors associated with breast cancer. Out of 1,900 scientific papers examined, 31 studies were selected. The findings indicated that lifestyle factors such as poor sleep habits, sleeping with lights on, and high stress levels significantly elevate the risk of developing breast cancer. Conversely, maintaining physical activity can notably lower this risk.
Identifying Major Risk Factors
The research identified central obesity, characterized by a high waist-to-hip ratio, as a critical risk factor. Women with a ratio of 0.85 or above face a considerably heightened risk of breast cancer. Researchers noted that after menopause, abdominal fat becomes a more significant contributor to breast cancer development than overall body weight. Additionally, a family history of breast cancer is also recognized as a risk factor.

Innovative Treatment Approaches
Nanotechnology in Breast Cancer Treatment
On a positive note, a groundbreaking nanotech drug delivery system has been developed for breast cancer treatment, potentially revolutionizing future therapies. This innovative approach, created in collaboration with IIT Madras and two Australian universities, Monash and Deakin, allows for direct drug delivery into cancer cells using a microscopic needle, sparing healthy cells from damage.
The nanotech system encapsulates the anticancer drug doxorubicin in specialized protective bubbles, which are then delivered into the cells through silicon tubes embedded with chips. This method ensures the safety of healthy cells.
Dr. Swathi Sudhakar, an Assistant Professor at IIT Madras, reported that laboratory tests on breast cancer cells yielded promising results, inhibiting cancer cell growth and preventing the formation of new blood vessels that tumors require.
Current Treatment Landscape
Breast Cancer Treatment Options
Breast cancer remains a leading cancer among women, but early detection and treatment significantly enhance survival rates. The disease is prevalent in both urban and rural settings. In Chennai, for instance, breast cancer constitutes 28% of female cancer cases, while cervical cancer accounts for 14%, ovarian cancer for 6%, and corpus uteri for 4%. Traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation often affect healthy tissues and lead to various side effects. In contrast, the new nanotech delivery method has shown to be 23 times more effective than standard drug administration, even at lower doses. Researchers believe this technology is reliable and has the potential for large-scale development and clinical trials in the future.
