The Value of Recognition: A Father's Lesson Through a Car

An elderly father, confined to his bed, called his daughter to impart a crucial lesson. He expressed, “I have invested in your education and ensured you are well-prepared for life. Upon my passing, I will not leave you any wealth. Everything I earned has gone into your schooling. However, I do have one asset left: an old car parked in the corner outside. Before you sell it, take it to the market and see what people are willing to pay for it.”

Following her father's advice, the daughter took the old car to the market. She approached a dealer to inquire about its value and returned home with the information. “Dad, the dealer said it looks quite old and offered 50,000 rupees for it.” The father then instructed her to show the car to the owner of a local grocery store and ask how much he would pay.

The grocery store owner examined the car and remarked, “How much should I pay for your old car? Since you frequently shop at my store, I can offer you 75,000 rupees. Check with your father and let me know.” The daughter relayed this offer to her father.

Next, the father advised her to take the car to a museum in a neighboring city to see what they would offer. Following his guidance, she visited the museum and asked the curator, “We are considering selling this car. How much would you be willing to pay for it?”

Upon returning, she excitedly told her father, “Dad, the museum staff said this Holden Torana is a classic and they would pay 1 million rupees for it!”

Seeing his daughter's joy, the father explained, “The right price can only be found in the right place. We should not feel disheartened or angry when we don’t receive the right value everywhere. If we are not getting the right price, it simply means we are not in the right place. We must identify those who appreciate us and where we can receive our true worth.”

After reading this story, it becomes clear to everyone its underlying message. Instead of wasting time lamenting, 'They didn’t value me, they ignored me,' let’s invest our time generously with those who appreciate and respect us. Surrounding ourselves with such individuals will lead to a fulfilling life.

Principle: Rather than complaining that everyone should value us, it is wise to honor those who genuinely appreciate us and remain in their company. We should not live under the illusion that everyone will value us just because we exist; a lifetime is not enough to achieve that.
