The Significance of Offering Vermilion to Lord Hanuman
Understanding the Tradition of Sindoor in Hindu Worship
In Hindu traditions, the act of presenting *sindoor* (vermilion) to Lord Hanuman symbolizes profound devotion and unconditional love. This ritual is rooted in a touching narrative from the *Ramayana*, which teaches valuable lessons about mindfulness and authentic faith. Let's delve into the reasons behind offering *sindoor* to Lord Hanuman...
A Heartwarming Myth of Lord Hanuman and Mother Sita's Vermilion
As per the legends, after Lord Rama's victory over Lanka, he returned to Ayodhya. One day, Lord Hanuman noticed Mother Sita applying red vermilion to her hair parting. Intrigued, he asked, "O Mother! What is the purpose of this red substance on your forehead?" With a warm smile, Mother Sita explained, "Dear Hanuman, this is *sindoor*. It is believed to enhance the lifespan of my Lord—your beloved deity, Lord Rama—and brings him joy. It represents my love for him and is a sign of his good fortune."
Hanuman, being the devoted servant of Lord Rama, thought to himself: "If a small amount of *sindoor* can prolong my Lord's life, then surely, if I cover my entire body with it, my Lord will achieve immortality, and his happiness will be limitless!"
Without a second thought, Hanuman covered himself entirely in vermilion. He then made his way to Lord Rama's court. Upon seeing Hanuman, completely adorned in red, Lord Rama couldn't help but laugh.
Lord Rama inquired, "Hanuman, what have you done?" With innocence, Hanuman replied, “Lord, Mother said that *sindoor* ensures your longevity and joy. I thought it best to cover myself completely in it, so you may always be safe and happy.”
The Origin of Offering Sindoor to Lord Hanuman
Moved by Hanuman's sincere devotion, Lord Rama embraced him and granted a boon: “From now on, any devotee who offers *sindoor* to you will receive my special blessings, and their troubles will be alleviated.” This marked the beginning of the tradition of offering *sindoor* to Lord Hanuman.
