Experts generally recommend consuming between 3 to 4 liters of water daily. However, discussions often overlook the timing and method of drinking water.

Insufficient water intake can cause numerous health issues, but do you know the correct way to hydrate?


When to Drink Warm Water?

Ayurveda emphasizes the benefits of drinking warm water on an empty stomach. In the 16th century, Ayurvedic sage Bhava Mishra outlined the appropriate timing and quantity for this practice. Today, many individuals are unaware of the proper way to hydrate, as highlighted by Ayurvedic expert Dr. Waralakshmi.


Recommended Quantity of Water

Drinking water on an empty stomach is referred to as Ushapan in Ayurveda. According to Acharya Bhava Mishra, one should consume 640 milliliters (approximately 8 prasruthi) of warm water in the morning. This method is considered highly beneficial for maintaining health.


Correct Timing for Hydration


In addition to the quantity, the method of drinking water is equally important. Many people today prefer drinking from bottles instead of glasses, often consuming cold water straight from the fridge while standing. This habit can be detrimental to health.


Ayurvedic scholars have also provided insights on the ideal timing for Ushapan. They recommend drinking warm water during Brahma Muhurta, which is the time before sunrise. However, modern lifestyles make it challenging for many to wake up at this hour.


Challenges of Drinking Water on an Empty Stomach


Dr. Waralakshmi notes that most people wake up between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM, a period referred to as Kapha Kala in Ayurveda, during which metabolism tends to be sluggish. Consequently, digesting a large amount of water at this time can be challenging.



Excessive water intake on an empty stomach can lead to bloating, stomach pain, gas, and acidity. Therefore, it is advisable to wake up before sunrise and limit the quantity of warm water to small glasses while increasing physical activity.
