Some actors choose to transform their public persona, while others opt for honesty. Susmita Mukherjee recently embraced the latter approach in a viral social media video.

The discussion began when a fan questioned why a talented actress like her would take part in films that are often seen as sexist and demeaning to women. Unlike many who might evade the question, Mukherjee delved into her past. "Did I compromise my integrity? Absolutely, I did. Did I feel proud of it? No, I didn't then, and I still don't feel good about it, but it was a matter of survival," she admitted.

This sense of helplessness stemmed from a significant event in 2002 when her family's media venture, Prayas Production, collapsed under the burden of a ₹1 crore debt. She wasn't alone in this struggle; other production houses like Track Cinema and Anil Chaudhary Production faced similar fates. With debt collectors frequently visiting her home and her children being young, the only option was to keep working. Every penny earned was directed towards repaying the debt, a process that took nearly four years.

After settling her debts, Mukherjee faced a new financial obligation. She made the decision to send her daughter abroad for her education, stating, "She was excelling in her studies, so I began sending her overseas. My husband, being a nationalist, questioned why there weren't good schools in India. Yet, I felt compelled to do it, so I followed through with my decision."

Now, she distinctly separates that challenging period from her current outlook. "I no longer accept roles that don't resonate with my spirit," she expressed. The compromises of her past are behind her, and she believes her explanation was long overdue.
