A Historic Milestone in Bodybuilding

Making waves in the Indian bodybuilding scene, Sunmeet Gill from Sirsa is poised to become the first turbaned athlete to compete at the esteemed Mr. Olympia event in Las Vegas this October. His decade-long journey of unwavering commitment has already inspired many within the bodybuilding community.

Like many boys from Haryana, Sunmeet initially entered the gym to build muscle. However, his interest quickly transformed into a passion for professional bodybuilding. In 2023, he achieved his pro card and is now competing at the professional level.

With Sirsa being represented on such a grand stage, does this signal a shift in perceptions in his hometown? “Not quite, as many still confuse weightlifting with bodybuilding,” he explains. “I hope my participation in this global championship will help change that perspective.”

Discipline and Dedication

Sunmeet emphasizes that discipline is crucial for any athlete. “One must maintain strict discipline throughout the year,” he notes. “I take my fitness seriously and remain focused on my goals.” His day typically starts around 8 or 9 am, allowing for a natural wake-up and complete rest before diving into a demanding training schedule. His routine includes fasting, cardio, intense gym workouts, and ensuring he walks at least 10,000 steps daily, all executed with meticulous attention.

Nutrition plays a key role in his regimen, with five home-cooked meals daily, rich in protein from sources like eggs, chicken, whey, and rice. “Initially, adhering to a diet was challenging,” he recalls, “but now I find it difficult not to stick to my meal plan.”

Balancing Life and Passion

During his growth phase, he allows himself to indulge in foods he enjoys, but he always opts for healthier choices. Does this strict lifestyle hinder his social life? Not at all. He enjoys going out, often filling his plate with vegetables, dal, and grilled options. It’s only when preparing for competitions that he avoids social gatherings entirely.

Sunmeet is driven by self-motivation, finding inspiration within himself. “I lead a disciplined and fulfilling life,” he shares, balancing his training, coaching, endorsements, and a trading business. His partner, Raveena, is also a sponsored athlete in bodybuilding, and together they carefully manage their nutritional needs.

Proud of His Heritage

Despite his siblings living abroad in Canada and New Zealand, Sunmeet has never felt the urge to leave India. “I do visit them, but I believe bodybuilding has a more robust framework here,” he asserts. “Everything from training to nutrition is accessible and affordable. India is the ideal place for me to pursue my dreams.”

His turban symbolizes more than just an accessory; it represents a deep connection to his identity and heritage. “I take pride in being the first turbaned athlete at Mr. Olympia. We represent only two percent of the global population, and my identity has garnered me significant attention and recognition,” he states.

A Message of Motivation

At 28, with a Master’s degree in Computer Applications and certification as an international nutrition coach, Sunmeet radiates enthusiasm and positivity. “I surround myself with positive influences. I am self-driven and constantly strive for improvement. My growth mindset would have led me to excel in any field,” he reflects.

With a growing fan base, Sunmeet leaves a powerful message: “Put your heart into everything you do, practice patience, and you can achieve any goal you set for yourself.”
