Significance of Varuthini Ekadashi: Observances and Prohibitions
Understanding Varuthini Ekadashi
According to Hindu beliefs, the Ekadashi Tithi, or lunar day, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Fasting and worshipping Him on this day is thought to cleanse one of sins accumulated over many lifetimes. Varuthini Ekadashi is observed on the Ekadashi Tithi that occurs during the *Krishna Paksha* (the waning phase of the moon) in the month of *Vaishakh*. In 2026, this significant day will be celebrated on Sunday, April 12. Following the prescribed rituals and worshipping Goddess Lakshmi alongside Lord Vishnu on this day is believed to bring *Akshaya Phala* (eternal merit). However, certain actions are strictly forbidden during Varuthini Ekadashi, and engaging in them may lead to various issues in life.
Preparation for the Fast
**Essential Preparations 24 Hours Prior**
As explained by Pandit Shridhar Shastri, an astrologer from Haridwar, Varuthini Ekadashi in 2026 will be observed on April 12. Fasting on this day is said to provide spiritual benefits equivalent to performing *Kanyadan* (the ritual of giving away a daughter in marriage) or enduring 10,000 years of penance. It is crucial to refrain from consuming *Tamasic* (impure) and non-vegetarian foods starting 24 hours before Ekadashi. Foods considered *Tamasic*, such as onions, garlic, turnips, and eggplants, should not be consumed from the morning of April 11. Additionally, all non-vegetarian items and intoxicants—including eggs, meat, fish, alcohol, *gutka*, *khaini*, *bidis*, and cigarettes—are strictly prohibited during the fasting period.
Consequences of Negativity
**No Remedies for Negative Actions**
Pandit Shastri warns that during the Varuthini Ekadashi fast, Lord Vishnu may become displeased if devotees entertain negative thoughts, jealousy, or impure intentions. If a devotee consumes forbidden items—whether intentionally or accidentally—or harbors negative feelings, the fast may lead to adverse outcomes that cannot be remedied through any subsequent actions. The significance of Varuthini Ekadashi is elaborated upon in the *Bhavishya Purana*.
