Significance of Shravan Month and the Kanwar Yatra in 2026
Understanding the Month of Shravan
The month of Shravan, according to the Hindu calendar, is a sacred period when followers of Lord Shiva engage in various religious practices, including prayers and *abhishek* (ritual bathing of the deity) using holy Ganges water. This month marks the beginning of the revered Kanwar Yatra, where devotees embark on a pilgrimage to honor Bholenath. Each year, as Shravan (or Sawan) arrives, devotees gather water from the Ganges and undertake extensive journeys on foot, performing *abhishek* with this water to fulfill their vows. It is believed that merely lifting the *Kanwar* (a bamboo structure carrying containers of holy water) can lead to the fulfillment of all wishes, even those unexpressed. In North India, countless pilgrims from various regions transport Ganges water from Haridwar to offer at Shiva temples as part of their religious commitments.

**Udaya Tithi (Sunrise Tithi) Details**
In 2026, the Kanwar Yatra will officially commence on *Pratipada* (the first day) of the *Krishna Paksha* (waning moon phase) of Shravan. According to astrologer Pandit Shridhar Shastri from Haridwar, the month of Shravan will begin at 8:06 PM on Wednesday, July 29. The *Udaya Tithi* for *Pratipada* falls on Thursday, July 30, marking the official start of the Kanwar Yatra, which will continue until the *Trayodashi Tithi* (13th day) of the Shravan *Krishna Paksha*. Devotees can start their pilgrimage by collecting water as per their vows.
Water Offering Schedule
**When Will Water Offerings Begin?**
According to Pandit Shridhar Shastri, devotees will commence their journey with the water on their shoulders starting Thursday, July 30, and will begin offering it to Bholenath after 8:00 PM on August 10. Due to the omission (*kshaya*) of the *Trayodashi Tithi* in the Shravan *Krishna Paksha*, the actual offering of Ganges water will start on August 11. The pilgrimage culminates with the *abhishek* of Bholenath using the Ganges water on the *Trayodashi Tithi*.
The Devotional Atmosphere in Haridwar
Every year, numerous Shiva devotees embark on their journey after taking a holy dip in the Ganges at Haridwar, traveling vast distances to honor Bholenath. The holy city of Haridwar resonates with chants dedicated to Lord Bholenath, such as "Bol-Bam," "Bam-Bam," and "Har Har Mahadev," as everyone immerses themselves in devotion. This year, a similar fervent atmosphere is expected to prevail.
