Understanding Kalashtami

In the Hindu lunar calendar, each lunar day (*tithi*) and day of the week (*vaar*) carries unique religious importance. Among these, Kalashtami stands out as a significant occasion. This festival is celebrated on the *Ashtami* (eighth day) of the *Krishna Paksha* (the waning phase of the moon) each month. On this day, devotees honor Lord Kaal Bhairav, a fierce aspect of Lord Shiva, through specific rituals. It is believed that sincere worship of Kaal Bhairav offers protection from fear, crises, negative energies, and various life challenges. Astrologer Anand Bhardwaj from Ujjain emphasizes that Kalashtami is particularly favorable for spiritual practices (*sadhana*) and special remedial actions, which are thought to help eliminate life’s obstacles.

Kalashtami Date and Observance

According to the Vedic calendar, the *Ashtami tithi* of the *Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha* will commence at 02:25 AM on September 4, 2026, and will end at 12:13 AM (midnight) on September 5, 2026. Based on the *Udaya Tithi* (the date of sunrise), the Kalashtami fast is set to be observed on Friday, September 4, 2026. Devotees are encouraged to worship Lord Kaal Bhairav and seek his blessings on this auspicious day.

Recommended Remedies for Kalashtami

**Remedies to Perform**
1. On Kalashtami, visit a Bhairav temple and collect a small amount of *sindoor* (vermilion) offered at Lord Bhairav's feet. Apply this to a black thread and chant the mantra: ‘Om Hreem Batukaya Apaduddharanaya Kuru Kuru Batukaya Hreem’. Afterward, tie the thread around your neck or on your right wrist. This remedy is believed to shield against negative energies and the evil eye.

2. If you are experiencing a persistent void in your life, consider this remedy on Kalashtami. Offer a black thread at the feet of Bhairav Baba, meditate for five minutes, and then tie it around your right ankle. This is thought to help remove obstacles.

3. To alleviate health issues or long-standing troubles, feed a black dog a *roti* (flatbread) smeared with mustard oil while silently invoking Lord Kaal Bhairav.

4. For wealth, prosperity, and material comforts, chant the Bhairav mantra while lighting a mustard oil lamp in an earthen diya. If there are tensions in the family, sit before Lord Shiva after bathing and recite the Shiva Chalisa with devotion.

5. Donating *urad dal* (black gram) on Kalashtami is said to invoke the blessings of Lord Shani, as *urad dal* is linked to the planet Saturn. This practice is also believed to enhance a harmonious love life.
