Significance and Rituals of Parama Ekadashi in 2026
Understanding Parama Ekadashi
In the Hindu calendar, the month of *Adhikamas* is particularly revered, and the Ekadashi that occurs during this period is deemed exceptionally sacred. The Ekadashi that falls in the *Krishna Paksha* (the waning phase of the moon) within *Adhikamas* is referred to as Parama Ekadashi. In 2026, this significant fast will be observed on June 11th. This occasion is unique as Parama Ekadashi is celebrated only once every three years, enhancing its spiritual value. It is believed that observing this fast with sincerity can bring joy, wealth, and positive vibes into one’s life. Let’s delve into the detailed worship practices and important guidelines.
Rituals for Ekadashi Fasting and Worship
On this auspicious day, rise early during *Brahma Muhurta* (the sacred pre-dawn period), cleanse yourself, and don fresh attire, preferably in yellow, which is considered particularly favorable. Next, settle at your worship space with a tranquil mind, hold some water in your hand, and make a solemn vow (*Sankalp*) to observe the fast.
Subsequently, lay a yellow cloth on a wooden platform (*chowki*) and place an idol or image of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Bathe the deities with water mixed with *Gangajal* (sacred Ganges water) and apply a *tilak* (mark) using yellow sandalwood paste.
Offer yellow flowers, fruits, and *Tulsi* (holy basil) leaves to the deities. Remember, it is forbidden to pluck *Tulsi* leaves on Ekadashi, so prepare them a day in advance.
**Chant this mantra during the worship:**
“Ekadashyam niraharah sthitvahamapare’hani, Bhokshyami Pundarikaksha sharanam me bhavachyuta.”
Afterward, light incense and a lamp (*diya*), and recite the *Vishnu Sahasranama* or chant ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’. Conclude with the *Aarti* of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Maintain the fast throughout the day, consuming only *Phalahar* (fruit-based diet) once. It is considered inappropriate to sleep during the day; instead, staying awake at night (*Jagran*) while singing devotional songs (*Bhajan-Kirtan*), chanting mantras, and reciting the *Vishnu Chalisa* is highly auspicious.
Breaking the Fast on Dwadashi
On the following day, during *Dwadashi Tithi*, after your morning bath, perform *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) of Lord Vishnu with milk. Following this, offer *Arghya* (ritual water offering) to the Sun God and provide a meal to Brahmins or those in need. Make donations and *Dakshina* (alms) as per your capacity. Finally, enjoy a meal yourself to conclude the fast.
Key Guidelines for Ekadashi Fasting
The Ekadashi fast extends beyond a single day; its associated rules commence on the *Dashami* Tithi (the tenth day of the lunar fortnight). On the night of *Dashami*, one should consume a light and *Sattvic* (pure and simple) meal. It is prohibited to cook or eat rice on the day of Ekadashi. This rule applies not only to the person fasting but also to other family members.
