Sakat Chauth 2026: Observances and Rituals for a Prosperous Future

Understanding Sakat Chauth

According to the Vedic calendar, Sakat Chauth, also referred to as Tilkut Chauth, is celebrated annually on the fourth day of the waning phase of the Magha month. This year, the observance falls on Tuesday, January 6th. On this day, women undertake a waterless fast, praying for the health, longevity, and prosperous future of their children.

Breaking the Fast

How to Conclude the Fast:
On Sakat Chauth, the fast is concluded after offering Arghya (a water offering) to the Moon God at night, accompanied by a puja performed with the appropriate rituals. In the evening, during the auspicious time, worship Lord Ganesha and present him with Tilkut, a sweet made from sesame seeds and jaggery. Light a lamp before the deity and listen to the Sakat Chauth narrative. It is considered highly auspicious to chant Lord Ganesha's mantras and offer 21 blades of Durva grass during the puja.

After the Arghya is offered to the moon at night, the fast can be broken. Initially, consume items made with sesame seeds and jaggery, followed by fruits, milk, sweet potatoes, and other foods. Grains can be consumed the next day.

Mantras to Chant

Recite these mantras:
1. Ganesha Beej Mantra - "Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha"
2. "Om Gam Ganapataye Sarva Karya Siddhi Kuru Kuru Swaha"
3. Ganesha Gayatri Mantra - Om Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha | Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva Karyeshu Sarvada ||
4. Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha |
Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva Karyeshu Sarvada ||

Important Considerations

Key Points to Remember:
Those participating in the Sakat Chauth fast should avoid wearing black clothing, as it is traditionally viewed as inauspicious during sacred occasions. When offering Arghya to the moon, take care not to let the water splash onto your feet. The fast is deemed incomplete without the offering of Tilkut, so ensure to present it to Lord Ganesha on this day.
