Rukhsar Rehman: A Passion for Theatre

“Theater is my first love”

Rukhsar Rehman, recognized for her roles in films like ‘God Tussi Great Ho’, ‘Sarkar’, ‘Bheja Fry 2’, ‘PK’, ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’, and ‘83’, as well as popular TV series such as ‘Kuch Toh Log Kahenge’, ‘Baal Veer’, ‘Dream Girl’, and ‘Mariam Khan – Reporting Live’, continues to hold a deep affection for her theatrical roots. She has also made significant contributions to the digital realm with web series like ‘Gone Game’ (Seasons One and Two), ‘The Night Manager’, and ‘Haq Se’.

Despite her achievements across various platforms, Rukhsar identifies primarily as a theatre artist and expresses no concern over the lower financial rewards it may bring.

“Theatre is my first love. I relish every moment spent on stage,” she remarked. “I’ve been involved in theatre for a decade. My inaugural play was ‘Nirbhaya’—a powerful piece directed by Yael Farber. We toured with that production for three years.”

Recently, Rukhsar showcased her talent in comedic plays ‘Bade Miyan Deewane’ and ‘Phir Se Shaadi’ during her trip to Lucknow. “The audience reception was fantastic. Lucknow has a vibrant community of theatre enthusiasts,” she noted.

Reflecting on the experience of performing, Rukhsar shared, “It’s challenging to articulate those feelings. It’s akin to being in love.”

One of her all-time favorites is ‘Mamma Mia’, which she had the pleasure of witnessing live in London last year. “I was completely captivated by the production quality. Everything was flawless. It’s my favorite to date—I’m a massive fan of ‘Mamma Mia’, the film, its music, and of course, Meryl Streep,” she expressed.
