In an era where stress and lifestyle-related issues are increasingly prevalent, a musician from Mandi is turning to India's ancient traditions to foster holistic health. Deepak Mattu, a music practitioner with over 25 years of experience, is dedicated to reviving and promoting music therapy as a powerful method for achieving mental, emotional, and physical equilibrium.
Rooted in the ancient Indian scripture Sama Veda, music therapy is believed to have the ability to affect human consciousness and restore inner peace when applied with the right knowledge and techniques. Building on this foundation, Mattu has launched a systematic initiative to help individuals tap into the therapeutic benefits of music.
After years of dedication to musical practice and research, Mattu now offers music therapy sessions both online and in-person. Approximately 50 participants, including some from abroad, have already experienced the advantages of his programs. His methodology integrates traditional sound therapy with yoga, guiding individuals toward a more balanced and stress-free lifestyle.
In addition to individual sessions, Mattu is also introducing this initiative in educational settings, aiming to educate students about music therapy. His outreach is designed to inspire young individuals to embrace positive habits and steer clear of substance abuse and other societal issues through musical engagement.
Mattu remarked, “While music therapy is gaining global recognition as a healing approach, we are slowly drifting away from our own rich traditions in India. My goal is to help people reconnect with themselves and lead more tranquil lives through a blend of yoga and music.”
He pointed out that even brief, mindful interactions with music can yield significant benefits. “In our fast-paced world, people seldom take time for self-reflection. Just listening to music mindfully for a few minutes can alleviate fatigue and enhance mood. With consistent practice, music therapy can greatly lower stress levels,” he explained.
Participants who have taken part in these sessions describe their experiences as life-changing. Attendees Radhika and Seema shared that the meditative techniques employed during therapy allowed them to reach profound relaxation and rejuvenation. They found it to be a distinctive and effective approach for stress relief and emotional revitalization.
A prominent figure in Mandi's music community, Deepak Mattu has mentored many students who have excelled in the field. Renowned for his talents in songwriting, composition, and singing, he has also released several music albums throughout his career.
Through his current initiative, Mattu is broadening his influence beyond performance and teaching—positioning music as a tool for healing and social change, and working to reintroduce an ancient Indian practice to contemporary society in a significant and impactful manner.
