Celebrating Raksha Bandhan in 2026

Raksha Bandhan, a festival that honors the bond of love and trust between siblings, is set to take place on August 28, 2026. This year, the celebration coincides with a unique astrological event, occurring on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Sawan month. Astrologer Swami Kanhaiya Maharaj from Kashi highlights that this special alignment will grant sisters an extended timeframe to tie the *Rakhi*.

In previous years, the timing of the *Rakhi* ceremony was often clouded by the presence of *Bhadra*, an inauspicious period. Fortunately, this year, *Bhadra* will end before dawn on August 28, allowing for a favorable time during the day to perform the ritual.

As per the Vedic calendar (*Panchang*), Raksha Bandhan this year aligns with the *Shatabhisha Nakshatra* and *Atiganda Yoga*. The Moon will also be in Aquarius (*Kumbh*), a sign governed by Saturn. This particular planetary arrangement is believed to enhance the day's significance. Swami Kanhaiya Maharaj advises that sisters can tie the *Rakhi* at any time on August 28, although certain periods are deemed especially auspicious.

The first favorable window (*Muhurat*) is from 6:36 AM to 9:45 AM, followed by another from 12:03 PM to 12:53 PM, and the last one from 7:43 PM to 9:30 PM.

During these auspicious intervals, sisters can perform *Tilak*, conduct *Aarti*, and tie the sacred thread while praying for their brothers' happiness and well-being. In return, brothers vow to protect their sisters and support them in all situations.

It is important to note that *Rahu Kaal*, a time considered inauspicious for significant activities, will occur on August 28 from 10:54 AM to 12:02 PM. Therefore, it is recommended to refrain from conducting the Rakhi-tying ceremony during this timeframe.

On Raksha Bandhan, siblings may engage in rituals and prayers that reflect their local customs and traditions. Variations in auspicious timings may occur based on regional *Panchang*, so it is advisable to check the specific timings relevant to your area.
