The Timeless Connection of Munna and Circuit

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani attributes the lasting charm of his Munnabhai series to the unique relationship between the characters Munna and Circuit. He assures fans that the third installment will be released once he develops an exciting concept.

Hirani made his directorial debut with the 2003 film Munnabhai MBBS, followed by the sequel, Lage Raho Munnabhai, in 2006. In these films, Sanjay Dutt portrayed the lovable gangster Munna, while Arshad Warsi played his devoted companion, Circuit.

According to Hirani, Circuit was always a humorous character, but Arshad infused it with a vibrant energy. He emphasized that in the sequel, Circuit's role was expanded significantly, making him a more integral part of the story.

In a recent interview, Hirani, who has collaborated with Warsi on the upcoming series Pritam and Pedro, described Circuit as a representation of unwavering loyalty to Munna, akin to the bond between Ram and Hanuman.

He elaborated, "It's similar to Sherlock and Watson; Munna needs a friend to express his thoughts. Circuit is that loyal companion, always ready to support Munna without question."

Warsi echoed this sentiment, stating, "Everyone desires a Circuit in their life, including myself." He recalled his initial impressions of Hirani, noting his storytelling sensibility when he first heard the script for Munnabhai MBBS.

Warsi expressed his admiration for the story, wishing he could play Munna's role due to its depth and heart. He appreciated Hirani's talent for crafting beautiful narratives, which motivated him to join the project.

Hirani shared that the casting process for Circuit underwent several changes. Initially, Shah Rukh Khan and Makrand Deshpande were considered for the roles of Munna and Circuit, respectively, but the project faced delays.

Reflecting on the casting journey, Hirani noted, "At one point, Shah Rukh was attached to the project, but as time passed, he became unavailable, leading us to cast Arshad instead."

Having followed Warsi's career since his debut in Tere Mere Sapne in 1996, Hirani was initially uncertain if Warsi would accept the role of Circuit, given its nature as the hero's sidekick.

Hirani expressed his enthusiasm for Warsi's involvement, recalling the excitement of the first day of shooting. He initially had reservations about Warsi's improvisational style but soon recognized the value he brought to the character.

Warsi's spontaneous addition of quirky lines, such as referring to a character as "Hakka noodles," impressed Hirani, who encouraged him to continue with such creativity, leading to memorable moments in the film.

Fans have long awaited the third installment of Munnabhai, which has yet to progress beyond a trailer. Hirani shares their eagerness, stating, "I also want to revisit these beloved characters."

He expressed a strong desire to create Munnabhai 3, noting that both he and Sanjay Dutt are passionate about the project. Dutt frequently expresses his enthusiasm for returning to the role.

Over the years, various plot ideas, including titles like Munna Bhai Chale America and Munna Bhai LLB, have been considered, but a final script remains elusive.

Hirani mentioned that he has enlisted other writers to contribute to the script, indicating that once a compelling story is finalized, Munnabhai 3 will be his top priority.

Additionally, Hirani's son, Vir Hirani, is set to make his acting debut in Pritam and Pedro, which also marks his entry into the OTT space as a creator and producer of this cybercrime comedy-thriller.

The series, directed by Avinash Arun, known for Paatal Lok and Three of Us, is scheduled to premiere on July 3 on JioHotstar.
