Rajkumar Hirani Discusses the Timeless Charm of the Munnabhai Franchise
The Enduring Legacy of Munnabhai
Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has shared insights into the lasting appeal of his beloved Munnabhai series, emphasizing that the emotional connection between the characters Munna and Circuit is its fundamental strength. He mentioned that a third film will be developed once a compelling concept is finalized, although fans might have to be patient until the script resonates perfectly.
Hirani made his directorial debut with Munnabhai MBBS in 2003, followed by Lage Raho Munnabhai in 2006. In these films, Sanjay Dutt portrayed Munna, a lovable gangster, while Arshad Warsi played his devoted friend Circuit. According to Hirani, Circuit's character was enriched significantly by Warsi’s portrayal, which infused humor, spontaneity, and warmth into the role.
The director elaborated that Circuit symbolizes unwavering loyalty, often likened to the relationship between Ram and Hanuman. "We envisioned Circuit as Hanuman and Munna as Ram. He never questions Munna—whatever Bhai says, he follows," Hirani explained, adding that their dynamic resembles that of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, where Circuit complements Munna’s thoughts and actions.
Warsi expressed that the character's charm lies in its relatability. "Everyone desires a Circuit in their life. I certainly do," he remarked, reminiscing about his initial impressions of Hirani’s storytelling, which persuaded him to accept the role.
Hirani also disclosed that the casting process for the film underwent several transformations before settling on Warsi. At various points, actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Makrand Deshpande were considered for the roles of Munna and Circuit before the final duo was established. He admitted to having initial reservations about Warsi’s improvisational approach but was soon impressed by how the actor infused each scene with a unique essence, including memorable ad-libs.
The filmmaker expressed a strong emotional connection to the franchise and hopes to revisit it. "If you ask me, Munnabhai is the project I most wish to pursue," he stated, noting that Sanjay Dutt remains enthusiastic about the sequel.
Over the years, various concepts like Munna Bhai Chale America and Munna Bhai LLB have been considered, but none have been finalized. Hirani mentioned that he has collaborated with other writers in the quest for the perfect story.
In addition, Hirani discussed his forthcoming OTT venture, Pritam and Pedro, which reunites him with Arshad Warsi. This cybercrime comedy-thriller, directed by Avinash Arun, will also feature the acting debut of Hirani’s son, Vir Hirani. The series is scheduled to premiere on July 3 on JioHotstar.
