Raising Awareness for Thalassemia and Bone Marrow Donation in Greater Noida
Campaign Launch for Blood Disorder Awareness
Blood disorders are increasingly concerning the public, prompting a new initiative for thalassemia screening and bone marrow donor registration at the Sharda Care Athletic Camp in Greater Noida. Dr. Pawan Kumar Singh, Vice Chairman of the Hematology Department, highlighted that bone marrow transplantation can offer a permanent solution for various severe blood disorders. The key to the success of this treatment lies in identifying a compatible bone marrow donor. Awareness campaigns and donor recruitment events are essential to ensure that patients can quickly find a well-matched donor.
Benefits of Bone Marrow Transplantation
**Ending the Need for Frequent Blood Transfusions**
Dr. Singh pointed out that bone marrow transplants are effective not only for thalassemia but also for various genetic blood disorders, blood cancers, and certain benign blood conditions like PNH (Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria). Thalassemia is the most prevalent genetic disorder necessitating this procedure, where affected children may need regular blood transfusions starting at six months old. A timely match with a bone marrow donor can lead to a successful transplant and lasting relief for the patient.
Importance of Prevention and Screening
Dr. Singh stressed that prevention is crucial for conditions like thalassemia. If both parents are carriers, prenatal testing can reveal if the fetus is affected. Timely screening and medical guidance can help prevent the disease, making it vital for young individuals and newlyweds to understand their carrier status.
HLA Testing and Donor Registration
**HLA Testing for Siblings**
Dr. Singh explained that HLA testing is initially performed on siblings of patients needing a bone marrow transplant to find a suitable match. If no family donor is available, the search extends to national and international registries of volunteer donors. Registration drives are organized to encourage healthy young individuals to sign up as potential donors. They are contacted only when their HLA matches that of a patient, increasing the chances of finding a life-saving donor.
Transforming Lives Through Awareness
**A New Lease of Life for Many Patients**
Dr. Singh outlined three main goals of the awareness camps: first, to motivate young people to check their carrier status through thalassemia screening; second, to help families with children suffering from blood disorders identify potential donors via HLA testing; and third, to register healthy volunteers as future bone marrow donors. Given Greater Noida's status as a significant industrial and educational center with a large youth population, these campaigns are particularly important. Increased awareness and donor registrations could provide many patients with a new chance at life.
