Precautions for the Upcoming Lunar Eclipse on March 3, 2026
Lunar Eclipse Details and Precautions
The first lunar eclipse of 2026 is set to take place on March 3, and it will be visible across India. During this event, the Sutak period will also be observed, prompting many to follow specific precautions based on traditional beliefs. Astrologer Pandit Anand Bhardwaj from Ujjain noted that this eclipse is distinct from regular days, as it is thought to heighten negativity in the environment. Pregnant women, in particular, are advised to exercise extra caution due to potential impacts on their unborn children.
According to the astrologer, the moon's rays during the eclipse are deemed inauspicious, so pregnant women should refrain from direct exposure to moonlight. It is also advisable to limit unnecessary outdoor activities. Religious customs suggest that maintaining a calm demeanor, engaging in prayer, and fostering positive thoughts can be beneficial during this period.
The lunar eclipse on March 3 is expected to occur from 3:19 PM to 6:47 PM, with the Sutak period commencing 12 hours prior to its conclusion. During this time, auspicious activities are discouraged, and temples will remain closed. The astrologer mentioned that elderly individuals and those who are unwell may eat between 6:30 AM and 9:30 AM, but it is recommended to practice restraint and focus on bhajan and puja throughout the day and evening.
Guidelines for Pregnant Women During the Eclipse
He emphasized that cooking and consuming food during the eclipse could be detrimental for pregnant women, as the eclipse's effects might taint the food. Therefore, fasting is encouraged, with meals taken only after bathing and once the eclipse has concluded. Additionally, the astrologer warned against using sharp objects like needles, knives, and scissors during this time, as it is believed that such actions could harm the unborn child. Activities such as sewing and knitting should also be avoided.
Recommended Practices During a Lunar Eclipse
In addition to taking precautions, engaging in religious practices can help mitigate negative influences. Chanting mantras dedicated to one's chosen deity, particularly those associated with the Moon, can generate positive energy. As a unique remedy, the Acharya suggested that pregnant women should take a thread equal to their height and place it in their home. After the eclipse, this thread should be disposed of in flowing water, which is believed to significantly lessen the eclipse's effects.
