Guidelines for Fasting on Janmashtami While Menstruating

Understanding the Janmashtami Fast: The festival of Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada, which this year falls on Friday, September 4th. This day is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is marked by deep devotion and reverence. Women traditionally fast and worship 'Laddu Gopal,' the infant form of Lord Krishna. However, many women question whether they can observe this fast if they are menstruating. Can they still perform the worship of Laddu Gopal? What precautions should be taken? Let's explore how to observe the Janmashtami fast and worship during menstruation.

Is Fasting Possible During Menstruation?
From a spiritual standpoint, fasting is rooted in faith, determination, and devotion. Menstruation is a natural bodily function, and thus, whether to fast during this time is a personal choice based on a woman's health and strength. If she feels well and experiences no discomfort, she may choose to fast—either a *Phalahar* fast (consuming only fruits or specific foods) or a regular fast, depending on her devotion. Conversely, if she feels weak or unwell, it is perfectly acceptable to refrain from fasting.

Worshiping Lord Krishna While Menstruating:
In some traditional households, there are customs that discourage touching worship materials or temple areas during menstruation. However, many families do not adhere to such strict prohibitions. Therefore, one can worship while honoring their household customs. Importantly, scriptures emphasize that mental worship holds greater significance than physical rituals. In the morning, one can make a resolve (*Sankalp*), meditate on Lord Krishna, and visualize the *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) ceremony. If desired, one can silently chant the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya," meditate on Lord Krishna, and sing *Bhajans* or *Kirtans*.

Guidelines for Serving Laddu Gopal During Menstruation:
Different families have varying beliefs regarding the service of Laddu Gopal during menstruation. If your family allows physical contact during worship, you may proceed without hesitation. If not, another family member can perform the service. The *Abhishek* can be conducted at midnight, followed by offering *Bhog* (ritual food) after dressing Bal Gopal in new attire. You may present *Bhog*, flowers, *Tulsi* leaves, and a *Deep* (lamp) to the deity as usual.

Preparing *Bhog* for Laddu Gopal During Menstruation:
Astrological beliefs suggest that if menstruation coincides with the fast, one should not personally prepare offerings such as *Makhan-Mishri* (butter and rock sugar), *Panjiri*, or *Paag*. Instead, you can ask another family member to assist with this task, providing them with instructions on how to prepare the *Bhog*. The *Prasad* made by them can then be shared among those observing the fast.

A Key Consideration Regarding the Fast:
It is crucial to view menstruation as a natural process rather than a state of impurity. The essence of devotion is paramount when worshipping Lord Shri Krishna. On Janmashtami, it is advisable to determine your fasting and worship practices based on your personal faith, health, and family traditions.
