New Year's Surge at Baba Mahakal Temple: Changes to Darshan Arrangements
Increased Devotee Attendance at Baba Mahakal Temple
Every day, the renowned Baba Mahakal Temple attracts hundreds of devotees. On January 1st, New Year's Day, this number swells to millions as people flock to seek blessings. The temple typically experiences a significant influx of visitors from outside the region during this festive time.
To manage the anticipated crowds, the temple committee implements various measures. This year, online bookings for the Bhasma Aarti will be paused from December 25th to January 5th. Additionally, the offline permission process will also be halted during this busy period. Nevertheless, devotees both from India and abroad can still participate in the mobile Bhasma Aarti darshan of Lord Mahakal during these dates.
Many individuals wish to commence the New Year with a visit to the deity, leading to an expected turnout of around 1 million devotees in Ujjain from December 25th to January 5th. In response to this surge, the temple administration is enhancing its preparations to accommodate the large crowds.
A new darshan management system is being developed to effectively handle the increasing number of visitors. This initiative includes the temporary suspension of online bookings for Bhasma Aarti, a change that is periodically enacted.
Moolchand Junwal, the Assistant Administrator of the Mahakal Temple Committee, noted that every New Year's Day sees a significant gathering for Bhasma Aarti. While many devotees wish to experience the Aarti in person early in the morning, space limitations prevent accommodating everyone. Thus, the decision to suspend online bookings from December 25th to January 5th was made.
He further explained that during this timeframe, offline permissions for general devotees will also not be available at the booking counter. However, to ensure convenience for all visitors, a free mobile darshan system has been established from Kartikeya Mandapam, allowing everyone to view Mahakal without any interruptions.
Since the inception of Mahakal Lok, the number of devotees has been consistently rising. In response, the Mahakal Temple Committee has made several key decisions to enhance the experience for devotees. On New Year's Day, a large crowd is expected, prompting these adjustments. Additionally, the temporary suspension of the 250 rupee fast darshan service on December 31st and January 1st is under consideration. This option may be discontinued as part of the new darshan management strategy. Last year, due to overwhelming crowds, the fast-track darshan was also suspended on these two days, allowing all devotees to have a uniform darshan experience of Lord Mahakal.
