Netflix's 'Operation Safed Sagar': A Tribute to India's Valor in Kargil
Commemorating a Historic Victory
On July 26, 1999, India achieved a significant milestone with its hard-won victory over Pakistan during the Kargil War. While the intense ground battles have been widely depicted in films, a lesser-known aspect is 'Operation Safed Sagar'.
Set against the backdrop of the harsh, snow-covered peaks at 18,000 feet, the Indian Air Force's mission marked a historic moment as the highest air operation globally. Until now, discussions surrounding the tactical brilliance and courage displayed by our aerial forces have been limited. However, the recent trailer launch for Netflix's series 'Operation Safed Sagar' serves as a timely homage to this chapter of history. Outside, Mumbai was drenched in monsoon rains, while inside, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation.
Paying Tribute to Unsung Heroes
High-ranking military officials, including Air Chief Marshal AP Singh and retired Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, gathered alongside veterans from the Golden Arrows—No. 17 Squadron, known for their daring reconnaissance and strike missions. Reflecting on the long wait for this story to be told, Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa remarked, “It has been twenty-seven years... it was long overdue.”
From Mythology to Military Action
After directing the gripping mythological thriller 'Asur', director Oni Sen now takes on the challenge of portraying the extensive air operations that provided India with a strategic advantage. He described the experience as 'overwhelming', emphasizing the responsibility of accurately depicting the courageous stories of those involved.
Star-Studded Cast Takes the Stage
The event featured a talented cast, including Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Verma, Siddharth, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Arnav Bhasin, Dia Mirza, Prajakta Kohli, and Adil Hussain. The series is notable for being filmed in the actual high-altitude locations where these missions occurred, rather than in comfortable studio settings. Central to the narrative are young pilots led by Wing Commander BS “Tony” Dhanoa (played by Jimmy) and Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja (Siddharth), who embark on a seemingly impossible mission. The fresh-faced pilots, known by their callsigns Dhali, Baldy, Sangu, and Goofy, are guided by Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Vinod Patney (Adil), now an Air Marshal. Dia Mirza portrays Kamalpreet Kaur Dhanoa.
Emotional Reflections from the Cast
During the Q&A session, Siddharth, known for his role in 'Rang De Basanti', became emotional when discussing his biggest takeaway from the series. With tears in his eyes, he expressed, “There’s a hope that whatever you do reaches young minds... many martyrs sacrificed their lives for us. This will spark discussions among the youth about our identity as a nation and the sacrifices made by these heroes.”
Jimmy added, “In my youth, many aspired to join the Forces. Nowadays, the focus seems to be on filmmaking rather than serving the country. Who will defend us then? It’s crucial for people to recognize who our true heroes are.”
Dia Mirza's Powerful Role
In her role as Kamalpreet Kaur Dhanoa, the wife of an air force officer, Dia felt a profound shift as she engaged with families at the air force camp. She described her character as an anchor, uniting the women while their husbands were on missions. Reflecting on her experience, she noted, “Every day, as their husbands left home, they bid farewell with a smile, even after the biggest arguments the night before.”
'Operation Safed Sagar' is set to premiere on Netflix India on August 7.
