Mauni Amavasya 2026 Date and Auspicious Time: Also referred to as Maghi Amavasya, Mauni Amavasya is a significant day for many, marked by a vow of silence, sacred bathing in holy rivers, and charitable acts. Observers believe that these practices cleanse one of sins and bestow merit. This day marks the first Amavasya of the new year. According to the Hindu calendar, it occurs on the Amavasya (new moon) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Magh. The largest holy bathing event of the Magh Mela is held at Prayagraj on this day. Let’s explore the date and auspicious timings for bathing and charity in 2026.



Mauni Amavasya Date
According to the Vedic calendar, the Magh Krishna Amavasya tithi (lunar day) commences on January 18, Sunday, at 12:03 AM and concludes on January 19, Monday, at 1:21 AM. Therefore, Mauni Amavasya is observed on January 18, Sunday, when the vow of silence is upheld, and rituals of bathing and charity are performed.


Mauni Amavasya in Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga


This year, Mauni Amavasya coincides with Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga, which is regarded as highly auspicious. Activities initiated during this yoga are believed to have a higher chance of success. Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga will be in effect from 10:14 AM until 7:14 AM the following day, January 19.


Additionally, Harshana Yoga and Vajra Yoga will also be present on Mauni Amavasya. Harshana Yoga is favorable for specific endeavors and will last from sunrise until 9:11 PM. Following this, Vajra Yoga will commence. The Purvashadha Nakshatra will be active from sunrise until 10:14 AM, succeeded by the Uttarashadha Nakshatra. On this day, the Sun will be positioned in Capricorn, while the Moon will transition from Sagittarius to Capricorn after 4:41 PM.


Mauni Amavasya Bathing and Charity Muhurta
The Brahma Muhurta is considered the most auspicious time for bathing on Mauni Amavasya, specifically between 5:27 AM and 6:21 AM. Although this is the ideal time, bathing can occur at any time throughout the day. Following the bath, donations should be made according to one’s ability.
The auspicious time (Abhijit Muhurta) for charitable acts is from 12:10 PM to 12:53 PM. It is advised to avoid any auspicious activities during Rahu Kaal, which is from 4:29 PM to 5:49 PM.

After bathing, it is customary to donate items such as warm clothing, rice, wheat, sesame seeds, jaggery, fruits, and blankets.
