Championing Adoption Beyond Infants

Mandira Bedi, an actress and cricket show host, has emphasized the importance of adopting older children, not just infants. She believes that the adoption process should be simplified to encourage more families to consider it.

Bedi, who is both a biological and adoptive mother, stated, “For us, adoption was never a last resort.”

“When I was dating my husband, I made it clear that I wanted to have a biological child and adopt one as well. This was not just a fleeting idea; it was a dream I cherished since my early twenties,” she shared.

“Motherhood transcends blood relations; it is defined by love, intention, and a lifelong commitment,” Bedi remarked during a panel discussion titled 'Normalising and Encouraging Adoption in India.'

While discussions about adoption often focus on infants, Bedi highlighted the often-ignored issue of older orphaned children who are in need of families.

“Many children are overlooked. Everyone desires a baby they can nurture from the start, but older children remain in the system, unseen and forgotten. Please consider them, as they are often neglected,” she urged.

Drawing from her own experience as an adoptive mother, Bedi recounted how her daughter Tara was four years old when she joined their family. She shared a poignant story from the adoption agency about a young girl who had been chosen for adoption three times but was returned each time due to unforeseen circumstances.

“It was devastating. That little girl still hadn’t found a home. It’s heartbreaking when older kids are left behind. But I’m a testament to the fact that it works. You can instill your values in them, shower them with love, and they can become everything you hoped for,” the actress expressed.

Bedi, who has a biological son named Vir Kaushal and an adopted daughter Tara Bedi Kaushal, faced the loss of her husband Raj Kaushal in 2021.

She is known for her notable roles in television series such as 'Aurat' and 'Kyunki Saaas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,' and has previously hosted events like the ICC Cricket World Cups and IPL.

The discussion was organized by Sunfeast Mom's Magic last week.
