Mahesh Vinayakram: Bridging Carnatic Music with Global Sounds
A Musical Journey Rooted in Tradition
Mahesh Vinayakram, the son of renowned Ghatam maestro Padma Bhushan T.H. Vikku Vinayakram, began his journey into the world of Carnatic music at just three years old. Through a disciplined and immersive approach to music, Mahesh discovered his own sense of freedom. However, it was during a performance at IIT Chennai at the age of 21, alongside legendary artists like Ustad Zakir Hussain and L Shankar, that he truly grasped the weight of his musical heritage.
Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Mahesh expressed, "It was then that I understood the true beauty of being a musician. Music nourished my spirit, and within its discipline, I found the freedom to carve my own path and create my own sound." This choice to become a vocalist in a family renowned for its percussionists, all of whom have received Grammy accolades, was a significant decision for him.
Honoring Family Legacy Through Vocals
Mahesh shared, "My grandfather, Thetakudi Harihara Sarma, a respected mridangam player, always believed that while our family had rhythm, it lacked melody. This inspired my inclination towards vocal music." Recently, he performed in Amritsar at the invitation of Phulkari-Women of Amritsar, a cultural organization, where he collaborated with artists like Sriram Sampath on flute and S. Hariharan on mridangam. This concert was part of his Ragas to Meditation project, which seeks to explore music as a dynamic landscape of time and experience.
The performance featured a blend of Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, including Waheguru Jaap and Om chanting, culminating in an energetic rhythm exchange among the mridangam, tabla, and konnoku.
Music as a Transformative Experience
"Once you grasp the fundamentals of music, it naturally finds its audience. When you blend these musical elements, the language resonates with listeners. For me, music embodies self-love and self-discovery. Through my project, I aim to showcase the immersive, meditative, and healing qualities of Ragas," Mahesh explained.
His global performances have included collaborations with the late Ustad Zakir Hussain, A.R. Rahman, and Nitin Sawhney, gracing some of the world's most prestigious stages and music festivals.
Innovating Within Tradition
Mahesh Vinayakram continues to innovate, being the first Indian male vocalist to perform in the renowned Cirque du Soleil, integrating Carnatic music into an international theatrical context. His thoughtful engagement with his musical heritage allows him to create rather than merely replicate. His collaborations span various genres, including Indian classical, jazz, and contemporary music, working with artists like Steve Smith and James Asher.
He embraces the fusion of Carnatic music with global influences, stating, "For me, music is a form of surrender and practice. It is inclusive and possesses the power to transform chaos into harmony."
