Mahesh Babu's Rugged Transformation for Varanasi

On his birthday, Mahesh Babu's first look as Rudhra from SS Rajamouli's highly anticipated film Varanasi has been revealed, offering fans a sneak peek at his rugged character in this epic action-adventure.

The official Instagram account for the film shared the image with the caption: "Another trip around the Sun… before we travel across time. Happy Birthday Rudhra." The newly released visuals showcase Mahesh Babu in a rugged style, complete with a beard and casual outdoor attire.

One striking image features Rudhra in the African wilderness, with zebras and giraffes in the backdrop. Another captures the actor lounging on a bamboo raft surrounded by lush greenery.

These images were taken during the film's shooting schedule in Africa, which included breathtaking locations near Mount Kilimanjaro and the Masai Mara. Director SS Rajamouli noted that these natural settings added a unique dimension that could not be replicated on a film set.

Rajamouli described Rudhra as a character destined for a purpose greater than himself, embodying both wit and vulnerability. He praised Mahesh Babu's ability to portray both fierce and fragile aspects of the character, stating, "Anyone can play fierce; very few can play fierce and fragile in the same breath."

He further expressed his awe at the filming locations, saying, "These frames are from our Africa schedule, and the land gave us something no set could. Shooting around Kilimanjaro and in the Masai Mara, I was stunned. There were mornings I felt even the 1.43:1 IMAX frame could not hold what was in front of us."

Varanasi, previously known as SSMB29, features Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran alongside Mahesh Babu. Chopra portrays Mandakini, while Prithviraj takes on the role of the antagonist.

Earlier, the makers revealed Chopra's first look as Mandakini on her birthday in July, showcasing contrasting visuals of her character in a bold black corset and a more adventurous outfit featuring a white crop top and cargo pants.

The caption accompanying her look read, "To more adventures… more discoveries… and journeys across every horizon." Directed by Rajamouli, Varanasi features music by Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani. This ambitious project spans multiple timelines and continents and is set for a global theatrical release on April 7, 2027, with production now in its final stages.
