Jameel Khan Reflects on the Success of Sony LIV's Gullak Season 5
The Heart of Gullak: A Relatable Journey
As the beloved series Gullak returns for its fifth season on Sony LIV, actor Jameel Khan discusses the show's enduring appeal. He explains, “This narrative resonates with everyone; it reflects the middle-class experience, addressing relevant themes while balancing emotional depth and humor. It evokes nostalgia and highlights what we often overlook.”
Bringing Santosh Mishra to Life
Jameel finds a reflection of his own father in his portrayal of Santosh Mishra, infusing the character with his personal values and beliefs. He notes that reprising this role is manageable, stating, “I must remain vigilant and meet the audience's expectations.” Despite his extensive experience in theater and television, he acknowledges that Gullak has been a transformative project for him, garnering immense love and recognition.
Navigating New Opportunities
When asked if the show's success has opened new doors, he chuckles, “Absolutely, but success often leads to being typecast. I’ve received numerous offers to play various father roles, but I always ask, can you surpass Santosh Mishra?”
A Journey of Acceptance
Throughout his career, Jameel has often turned down roles, initially hesitant about Gullak as he viewed OTT platforms as akin to television. However, he expresses gratitude for eventually joining the project after the creative team at TVF recognized his talent during a stage performance years ago. He recalls working alongside Naseeruddin Shah, who often critiques him for stepping away from theater, a sentiment he shares, admitting, “Every time I watch a play, I regret my decision.”
A Unique Directorial Experience
While he would love to collaborate with director Anurag Kashyap again, he prefers that Anurag reach out to him rather than him pursuing the opportunity. He praises Anurag's distinctive directing style, noting, “No other director allows for as much improvisation and natural acting.”
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on his career, which includes notable projects like Mandala Murders and upcoming films such as Jugaadu and a Sooraj Barjatya project, Jameel expresses satisfaction but not complacency. He states, “I am happy but not fully content. The day I feel completely satisfied, it will signal the end of my career. I believe the sky is the limit.”
Embracing Versatility
Jameel advocates for versatility in roles and encourages creators to explore various genres, whether they be crime thrillers or dramedies.
A Message of Love and Tolerance
As he spreads joy through Gullak, Jameel's personal life is filled with love and gratitude. In a time of division, he emphasizes, “India has always been a symbol of love and tolerance, and we must coexist with affection.” This sentiment mirrors the dynamics of his on-screen Mishra family, despite minor disagreements.
