Ishqnama: A Love Story That Transcends Borders
Unveiling the Trailer of Ishqnama
The much-anticipated trailer for Ishqnama was released on July 14, offering viewers a glimpse into the film ahead of its global premiere on July 24.
This Punjabi romantic film stands out from typical love stories that conclude with the credits. Ishqnama is unique as it portrays a real-life narrative that remains ongoing, with the cast and crew acutely aware that they are not merely recounting history but are part of an unfinished tale.
The story itself is almost unbelievable. In 1982, Nirmal Singh, affectionately known as Nimma, fell in love with Naseema Begum, a Muslim woman living across the India-Pakistan border. This led to an extraordinary series of events: thirty-four illegal crossings of one of the world's most heavily fortified borders, all conducted in secrecy over two and a half years until he was apprehended by Pakistani authorities and imprisoned.
Director Arvvindr S Khaira makes his directorial debut with this film, which is based on the book Hind Pak Bordernama. What makes this adaptation particularly compelling is that the story is still unfolding. Nimma revealed that he spoke with Naseema in 2019, learning that she now resides alone in England. Reports suggest that efforts are ongoing to locate her, transforming the film's release into an active search rather than a mere historical recount.
One poignant detail from this search is an old photograph of Naseema that was never completed. The team utilized artificial intelligence to finish it and presented it to Nimma as a surprise. Jayy Randhawa shared, “When Bapuji saw it, he got emotional.”
Shehnaaz Gill, who portrays Naseema, expressed that this role pushed her beyond her comfort zone: “This is a larger-than-life old-school romance that portrays love as a revolution.” She dedicated her performance to anyone who has experienced love.
Jayy, who plays Nimma alongside Shehnaaz, chose Punjab for the trailer launch as a tribute to his roots. He remarked, “Bringing Nimma to life is my way of thanking the audience that has supported me throughout my journey.” He reflected on the emotional depth of his character, stating, “Patience and confidence, that never gives up.”
Saurabh Sachdeva joins the cast as the formidable Bilawal Khan, marking his debut in Punjabi cinema. The film's soundtrack, featuring the already popular track Narak by B Praak and Jyotica Tangri, written by Jaani, emphasizes heartbreak rather than triumph.
Ishqnama is set to release in India, Canada, the UK, and the US on July 24, and fittingly, it will also be available in Pakistan, aligning with its border-crossing narrative.
