India Couture Week 2026: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity by Masaba Gupta and JJ Valaya
Celebrating Indian Craftsmanship at India Couture Week 2026
The second day of India Couture Week 2026 showcased the unique interpretations of Indian couture by renowned designers Masaba Gupta and JJ Valaya. Both collections, while rooted in traditional aesthetics, reflected the individual design philosophies of each creator.
Masaba made a significant mark by unveiling her inaugural bridal couture line, titled Chardi Kala. This collection introduces her signature bold prints and innovative styles into the realm of wedding fashion.
According to the official description, "The journey begins in the sacred landscapes of India before drifting into the blue-green waters of Antigua and the vibrant tropics of the Caribbean. Bridal seamlessly transforms into resort bridal."
On the runway, models showcased a variety of traditional outfits, featuring stunning full-flared lehengas, intricately embroidered dupattas, and metallic zari work, all enhanced by shimmering sequins and detailed handcrafted embellishments. Modern couture elements such as structured layering and diverse draping techniques were also incorporated.
In contrast, JJ Valaya presented his Autumn/Winter 2026 collection named SIDDI, which encompasses bridal couture, occasion wear, menswear, and more. The runway featured intricately designed lehengas, contemporary saris, flowing anarkalis, regal sherwanis, and impeccably tailored bandhgalas, all adorned in a rich color palette of antique gold, ivory, noir, champagne, deep jewel tones, and earthy hues.
Valaya elaborated on his collection, stating, "SIDDI began with the idea of a journey, one that crossed oceans, geographies, and centuries, eventually creating an identity entirely its own. I was fascinated by the Siddis of India and by this extraordinary confluence of African origins with the many cultural influences absorbed over generations on the Indian subcontinent." The ongoing 19th edition of FDCI's Hyundai India Couture Week 2026 is taking place at the Taj Palace in New Delhi.
