Homemade Phalahari Snack Mix Recipe for Fasting
Delicious Phalahari Snack Mix for Your Fasting Needs
During Sharadiya Navaratri or any fasting occasion, the desire for something crunchy and savory often arises. Many store-bought snacks can be overly greasy, and sago (sabudana) can become sticky, making it less enjoyable.
To solve this issue, we present a simple recipe for a crispy, tasty, and non-sticky *phalahari* (fasting-friendly) snack mix that you can easily prepare at home.
Ingredients for the *phalahari* snack mix:
1 cup fine-grain sago (*sabudana*)
2–3 large raw potatoes
1/2 cup peanuts
10–12 curry leaves
1 teaspoon black pepper powder
Rock salt (*sendha namak*) – to taste
1 teaspoon powdered sugar (optional for a sweet-and-tangy taste)
Peanut oil or *ghee* (clarified butter) for frying
Steps to Prepare the *phalahari* Snack Mix:
Begin by peeling and grating the raw potatoes. Rinse the grated potatoes several times in clean water to eliminate excess starch. Drain the water using a strainer, then spread the shreds on a cotton cloth for about 15–20 minutes to dry. This step is crucial for achieving crispy potato shreds.
Heat the oil or *ghee* in a pan until it reaches a high temperature. Add the *nylon* sago in small portions; it will puff up and expand rapidly. Frying at high heat ensures that it cooks thoroughly and remains non-sticky. Once fried, transfer the sago to a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
Next, add the dried potato shreds to the hot oil and fry until they are golden brown and crispy. After that, fry the peanuts and curry leaves until they are crunchy, then remove them from the oil.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the fried sago, potato strips, peanuts, and curry leaves. Season with rock salt, black pepper powder, and powdered sugar, then mix gently.
Your crunchy and flavorful *phalahari* snack mix is now ready! Let it cool completely before storing it in an airtight container. Enjoy this crispy treat with your tea for the next nine days.
