Rising Trends in High-Risk Pregnancies in India: Insights from Health Experts
Increasing High-Risk Pregnancies in India
Leading fertility specialists have expressed concerns that high-risk pregnancies are on the rise in India, attributing this trend to evolving lifestyles, postponed parenthood, and heightened stress levels. During a panel at the India Health Summit 2026 – South Edition, Dr. T. Rajeswari Reddy, an obstetrician and expert in robotic and laparoscopic surgery, emphasized that modern living is contributing to increased complications during pregnancy. She remarked that while technology has simplified many tasks, it has not led to healthier choices. "Although technology saves time, we are not utilizing that time for health improvements," she stated.
Factors Contributing to High-Risk Pregnancies
Dr. Reddy pointed out that poor lifestyle choices are a significant factor in the rise of high-risk pregnancies. "The consumption of junk food and a lack of physical activity are leading to more high-risk cases," she noted. Additionally, she highlighted a cultural shift in India, where many couples are opting to delay marriage and starting families due to career goals and financial considerations. This trend of later pregnancies correlates with increased risks for complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, and chromosomal issues, particularly as maternal age rises. Furthermore, both physical and mental stress are adversely affecting reproductive health. "The incidence of high-risk pregnancies is set to rise," Dr. Reddy warned.
Understanding High-Risk Pregnancies
A pregnancy is classified as high-risk when either the mother, the baby, or both are at an elevated risk of health complications before, during, or after delivery. Common risk factors include:
- Pregnancy after age 35
- Obesity or being overweight
- Diabetes or hypertension
- Multiple pregnancies (twins or triplets)
- History of pregnancy complications
- Substance use (smoking, alcohol) or poor nutrition
- Chronic health conditions
- High stress levels
Experts suggest that many of these risks can be mitigated through preconception counseling, adopting healthier lifestyles, and ensuring regular prenatal care.
IVF Success Rates in India
Dr. Vandana Hegde, Clinical Director and Chief IVF Consultant at Hegde Fertility, shared that India's IVF success rates are now comparable to global standards. "India's success rate in treating infertility matches international benchmarks," she stated. Dr. Hegde noted that infertility is increasingly recognized as a common issue, prompting more couples to seek medical assistance. "There is a growing demand for infertility treatments as it is no longer stigmatized, unlike in the past," she explained.
Challenges in Access and Affordability
Despite the high success rates of fertility treatments, affordability remains a significant barrier. Dr. Hegde mentioned that while the demand for IVF is increasing, many couples still face challenges in accessing these services due to high costs and limited availability in various regions. Experts at the summit emphasized the need for greater awareness, improved access to fertility services, and promotion of healthier lifestyles to tackle the reproductive health challenges facing India. As trends like delayed parenthood, stress, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles become more prevalent, healthcare professionals believe that prevention, timely intervention, and affordable fertility care will be crucial in enhancing maternal and child health outcomes.
