To address this, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has partnered with Abbott to designate June 21, the year's longest day, as 'Vitamin D Day of India.' Medical professionals emphasize the importance of recognizing the 'sunshine vitamin' as crucial for health, advocating for healthier lifestyle choices and timely medical interventions. Dr. Anilkumar J. Nayak, the National President of IMA, stated, "We observe the health repercussions of Vitamin D deficiency across various age groups. This initiative aims to enhance awareness and motivate individuals to adopt simple preventive measures for improved health.”

Vitamin D is crucial for maintaining robust bones, healthy muscles, and a strong immune system. Experts attribute this contradiction to various factors, including prolonged indoor activities for work or study, urban lifestyles that limit outdoor exposure, and air pollution that obstructs the ultraviolet B (UVB) rays essential for Vitamin D synthesis. Additionally, frequent use of sunscreen and protective clothing reduces skin exposure, and natural skin pigmentation can hinder Vitamin D production. Thus, residing in a sunny environment does not guarantee sufficient Vitamin D levels.

June 21 marks the longest day of the year, providing maximum daylight, making it an ideal time to remind individuals that safe sun exposure is one of the easiest natural methods to enhance Vitamin D production. The IMA's annual observance aims to promote:

Dr. Jejoe Karankumar, Medical Affairs Director for Abbott India, recommends spending 15 to 30 minutes in sunlight between 10 AM and 2 PM to help the body naturally generate Vitamin D. However, individual needs may vary based on skin type, age, geography, and lifestyle. He cautioned that sunlight alone might not suffice, and regular screenings are vital since symptoms can be subtle. If levels are low, a healthcare provider can recommend appropriate measures to restore and maintain healthy levels. Vitamin D deficiency is one of India's most neglected health issues. By declaring June 21 as Vitamin D Day of India, the IMA aims to inspire millions to take simple preventive actions, enjoy outdoor time, discuss Vitamin D with their healthcare provider, and get screened when necessary.
