Leadership Transition at AIIMS Delhi

India's leading medical institution has appointed a new interim director, Dr. Nikhil Tandon, who is already a prominent figure within the organization. Currently serving as the Dean (Academic) and Head of Endocrinology at AIIMS Delhi, Dr. Tandon steps into this role following the resignation of Dr. M. Srinivas, who has taken a full-time position with NITI Aayog. This change has prompted a swift administrative adjustment at AIIMS.

As per the official announcement made on April 27, Dr. Tandon will assume the responsibilities of acting Director immediately. However, this is a temporary arrangement, lasting up to six months or until a permanent director is appointed, whichever occurs first. Notably, this role does not come with any additional financial benefits, as stated in the memorandum: "Dr. Nikhil Tandon will not be entitled to any additional remuneration/honorarium for the above additional assignment." This indicates that Dr. Tandon will manage one of the most demanding administrative roles in India's healthcare sector without extra pay.

Dr. Tandon's appointment reflects a commitment to stability. With over 20 years of experience in public healthcare, he is well-acquainted with the operations at AIIMS. A distinguished endocrinologist, his research has primarily focused on cardio-metabolic diseases, diabetes, and extensive public health studies—areas that are crucial to India's healthcare agenda. His involvement in academic leadership at the institute makes this transition a natural progression rather than a significant shift.

This decision ensures that AIIMS Delhi, regarded as a cornerstone of India's public healthcare framework, continues to operate smoothly while the search for a permanent director is underway. The message is clear: familiar leadership and steady management will maintain ongoing research, patient care, and academic activities without interruption or policy changes.
