Google Wallet Enhances Digital Identity Management

Google has unveiled a new feature in India that allows users to store their Aadhaar information digitally within Google Wallet. This innovation significantly reduces the necessity of carrying a physical Aadhaar card at all times.

Developed in partnership with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), this feature enables users to present their identity securely. Importantly, it eliminates the need to disclose the entire Aadhaar card.

The system operates on a 'Verifiable Credentials' framework. This means that if a situation only requires age or identity verification, users can selectively share that specific information, protecting their full Aadhaar number and other sensitive details. This approach enhances both privacy and security.

**Control Your Information Sharing**
According to Google, this feature adheres to international security standards and includes 'selective disclosure' capabilities, allowing users to control what information they wish to share.

This functionality can be applied in various scenarios, such as age verification for movies at PVR INOX, identity checks on BharatMatrimony, auto-filling visa applications on Atlys, and visitor verification on MyGate, making these processes much simpler.

Google has announced plans for more services to adopt this system soon, further streamlining digital identity management. Additionally, the company is expanding its digital ID features to other countries, including Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil, where users can store passport-based IDs in the Wallet.

The introduction of Aadhaar support in Google Wallet represents a major advancement in user convenience and security, potentially eliminating the need for physical documents to verify identity.
