The Significance of Ganga Dussehra
**The Significance of Ganga Dussehra**
According to ancient legends, the 60,000 sons of King Sagara were unable to attain salvation (*Moksha*) due to a curse from Sage Kapila. King Bhagiratha, a descendant of King Sagara, undertook the task of bringing the holy Ganges to Earth to liberate his ancestors. He believed that only the touch of the Ganges could absolve them of their sins and grant them salvation.
Through years of intense penance, King Bhagiratha pleased Lord Brahma and successfully brought the Ganges to the mortal realm. On the tenth day (*Dashami*) of the waxing moon phase (*Shukla Paksha*) in *Jyeshtha*, Mother Ganges descended to Earth. Her waters washed away the sins of King Sagara's sons, granting them eternal salvation. Since then, bathing in the Ganges has been regarded as a sacred practice for liberation from sins and achieving salvation.
