A Diverse Artistic Experience Awaits
This week, the Punjab Kala Bhawan invites visitors to immerse themselves in a unique artistic journey where each wall tells a different story. A striking charcoal woodcut depicting a man gazing into his fragmented reflection contrasts with a vivid jungle scene teeming with cacti, frogs, and beetles. Nearby, an oil painting features a woman in an orange robe walking past ornate golden arches. At the entrance, a bull crafted from wire and discarded LED strips carries a rider made from scrap materials, while deeper within, a warrior sculpted from tire rubber stands guard, shield in hand. This exhibition showcases not only sculptures but also woodcuts, watercolors, and photographs, each drawing the viewer's attention in new directions.
K.R. Kohli, the artist behind the charcoal artwork titled Trumpet Player, shared his philosophy of artistic restlessness. He expressed, “I enjoy exploring various subjects, textures, and techniques,” recalling how a wedding band musician inspired him, “I wanted the musicians to be part of our celebration.” This year, he proudly displayed a painting by his daughter alongside his own work. “It’s a joy to have a father-daughter duo featured for the first time,” he remarked, adding, “I have always supported her artistic endeavors.” However, he found himself captivated by other pieces in the exhibition, particularly a canvas portraying two children at a window, which surprised him with its subtlety.
Gallery-goers navigated the space with their own curated maps. Gurleen Kaur, a student who discovered the exhibition through a newspaper, shared, “I was particularly drawn to two pieces: Golden Rays from Chandigarh and Racing Hostel Life, which depicted the everyday experiences of hostel life. I could relate to that as a student.” Harveen, on the other hand, was inspired by a portrait of a woman exuding confidence amidst vibrant colors, stating, “It’s very inspiring… every woman should embody that spirit.”
When asked about their experience walking through the gallery, one visitor reflected, “It felt both calm and energetic. Initially, there was a sense of tranquility, but as I encountered the vibrant colors, it transformed into an energetic experience.” This sentiment may perfectly encapsulate the exhibition — a dynamic blend of emotions and artistic expressions.
The Annual Art Exhibition 2026 is currently on display at Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16B, Chandigarh, and will continue until August 13, open daily from 11 am to 7 pm.
