A Daring Leap into Animation

In an era where launching even a major film in theaters poses significant risks, the decision to release an animated feature, 'Return of the Jungle', is indeed a bold move. However, for Vaibhav Kumaresh, an Emmy-nominated animation creator and director, he views this as both a challenge and an opportunity. He states, “Every endeavor carries its risks, yet we approached this project with immense love and unwavering passion.”

A New Era of Indian Animation

The teaser promises ‘Indian animation like never before’, and Kumaresh is confident that Indian audiences have always embraced animation. A testament to this is the remarkable success of 'Mahavatar Narsimha', which grossed over Rs 300 crores. He believes that mythology serves as the backbone of Indian animation, as he puts it, “is leading the way.” However, he prefers to delve into Indian folklore and reinterpret it for modern audiences.

The Jungle as a Metaphor

The jungle serves not only as a vibrant backdrop for his creativity but also symbolizes deeper wisdom. He explains, “The jungle represents a parallel universe, rich in wisdom, something we have lost touch with and need to reclaim. Thus, the title 'Return of The Jungle'.”

Universal Themes in Animation

His animated world is filled with valuable life lessons, particularly about how children navigate daily challenges. Importantly, this film, while centered on children, is crafted for all audiences. Kumaresh emphasizes that he creates films primarily for himself, without a specific target demographic in mind. His previous work, 'Lamput', earned him an International Emmy nomination, yet he remains focused on his artistic vision rather than international appeal.

Indian Animation's Global Standing

When discussing whether Indian animation meets global standards, he references the Indian contributions to the 2019 remake of 'The Lion King', which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. A significant team of Indian artists from the Moving Picture Company (MPC) in Bengaluru worked on the project. He notes, “In India, we have two types of animation ecosystems: one that serves European and American studios, and another that, like us and the duo behind 'Mahavatar Narsimha', focuses on telling Indian stories authentically.”

The Heart of Filmmaking

While Indian animators utilize the same tools as their global counterparts, Kumaresh highlights that the essence of a good film transcends technical prowess. “The heart is central to our filmmaking, and our goal is to touch hearts,” he asserts.

A Call to Aspiring Animators

As a graduate of the National Institute of Design, Kumaresh credits his education for instilling the fundamentals of animation and inspiring him to contribute positively to society. Despite the hurdles faced in creating his first feature film, he and his team at Vaibhav Studios committed to their vision.

To those aspiring to enter the animation field, he advises, “Pursue both education and a clear purpose.” Growing up with a love for Amar Chitrakatha and Asterix, he finds inspiration in everyday life, though he acknowledges that the passion driving motivation is rare.

Insights on Animation

“Animation filmmaking is no different from live action; it’s just that in the imaginative realm of animation, we can tell stories that live action cannot.”

“AI serves as an enabler; it’s like having an intelligent assistant to handle tasks you prefer to avoid.”
