Among the iconic structures in Mumbai, Antilia stands out as the private abode of Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries. Located on Altamount Road in South Mumbai, this 27-storey building is often hailed as one of the priciest private residences globally. Encompassing approximately 400,000 square feet and soaring to a height of 173 meters, Antilia resembles a vertical city tailored for a single family. The architectural design, crafted by the Chicago-based firm Perkins & Will and constructed by Leighton Asia, beautifully merges modern architecture with traditional Indian Vastu Shastra principles. A Vertical Palace
The extensive amenities within Antilia's 27 levels resemble a luxury catalog. This high-rise boasts features such as an ice cream parlor, a grand banquet hall, 49 bedrooms, parking for 168 vehicles, a snow room, a private cinema, nine elevators, and three helipads. One of its most unique attractions is the snow room, engineered to create artificial snowfall and maintain sub-zero temperatures, providing a refreshing escape from the humid Mumbai climate. Other luxurious spaces include a grand ballroom, marble swimming pools, a private temple, a cinema, spa and salon areas, multi-tiered gardens, and an ice cream parlor. The interior design incorporates sun and lotus motifs, with a palette of beige, cream, and wood tones. The lounge area features fresh flowers, mirrored walls, designer vases, plush velvet chairs, and a richly colored Turkish rug, enhancing the overall luxury. Each floor is uniquely themed and constructed, with the height of each floor equivalent to that of a two-storey building, making it the tallest residence owned by a single family worldwide. The skyscraper is also engineered to endure earthquakes of up to 8.0 on the Richter scale, and over 600 staff members are employed to maintain the residence.
Why Antilia Lacks Outdoor AC Units
For years, rumors have circulated that Antilia lacks air conditioning. However, the reality is more fascinating. The Ambani family opted against traditional outdoor AC units to preserve the building's stunning glass and stone facade. Instead, Antilia utilizes a cutting-edge centralized cooling system. Even in the heat of Mumbai, the residence remains comfortable without visible air conditioning units. The central system regulates temperatures by integrating materials like marble, flowers, and plants throughout the home.
The Family's Private Sky Residence
While the lower levels of Antilia are designated for parking, staff quarters, entertainment, and wellness facilities, the Ambani family resides in a distinct realm above it all. The top six floors are dedicated to the family, with each member having an entire floor to themselves. Nita Ambani has mentioned that they chose the upper floors for optimal sunlight and fresh air. At over 560 feet, the top floor provides breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea, elevating them above Mumbai's humidity and pollution. These upper levels are home to Mukesh and Nita Ambani, along with their children Akash, Isha, and Anant, and their partners Shloka Mehta and Radhika Merchant. Access to these private floors is limited to family members and a select few trusted staff, with security throughout the building being exceptionally stringent.
