Chaitra Navratri 2026: A Time for Devotion
Chaitra Navratri 2026: The revered festival dedicated to the Divine Mother begins tomorrow. It is believed that during these nine days, devotees can alleviate their troubles by seeking the Mother’s *darshan* (sacred sight) and offering prayers. In Delhi, numerous famous temples attract large crowds of worshippers eager for *darshan*. If you find yourself in the capital, here are five temples worth visiting.
Yogmaya Temple: A Historical Gem
The first temple is the Yogmaya Temple, a *Siddhpeeth* located in Mehrauli, with a history that dates back 6,000 years. This temple was established by Lord Krishna, and the very seat (*asan*) where He consecrated it is still preserved. The temple priests sit on this seat to bless the devotees. According to priest Anand Sharma, during Navratri, the temple is open from 4:00 AM to 11:00 PM, attracting visitors from afar who come to offer a complete set of *Shringar* (ornaments and cosmetic offerings) to the Mother Goddess. It is believed that the Divine Mother grants the wishes of those who pray sincerely here, making *darshan* especially significant during the festival.
Kalkaji Temple: A Popular Pilgrimage Site
The second temple, the Kalkaji Temple, is extremely popular and often sees lines stretching up to four kilometers for *darshan*. Open daily from 4:00 AM to 11:30 PM, it briefly closes for *Bhog* (ritual food offering) and *Aarti* ceremonies between 11:30 AM and 12:00 PM, and again from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The temple is beautifully decorated with flowers during Navratri.
Jhandewalan Temple: A Historic Landmark
Located in Karol Bagh, the Jhandewalan Temple is over 200 years old and was founded by Badri Bhagat. According to legend, Goddess Durga appeared to him in a dream, revealing the location of a sacred idol hidden in a cave. The temple is named after a *Jhanda* (sacred flag) discovered during excavation. The original idol remains enshrined in the cave, and visiting this temple during Navratri is believed to bring the blessings of the Mother Goddess.
Gufa Mandir: A Unique Experience
Another notable site is the 'Gufa Mandir' (Cave Temple) in Preet Vihar, one of the oldest temples in Delhi, dedicated to Mata Vaishno Devi. The temple features a large cave that replicates the atmosphere of the original Vaishno Devi shrine, providing devotees with a unique experience. Inside, a smaller cave houses idols of Goddesses Katyayani, Chintpurni, and Jwala Devi. The temple is bustling with devotees throughout Navratri, during which special *Havan* (sacred fire rituals) and *Pujan* (worship ceremonies) are conducted.
Dwarka Temples: A Hub of Devotion
In the Dwarka area, several prominent temples dedicated to Mata Rani can be found, including the Mata Rani Temple in Sector 1, affectionately known as the 'Sher Wali Mata Mandir' (Lion-Riding Goddess Temple), and the Vaishno Devi Temple in Sector 7. These temples draw large crowds during the Navratri celebrations. Additionally, the Kali Bari Temple in Sector 11 is another popular shrine among devotees.
