Understanding Vat Savitri Vrat 2026

Vat Savitri Vrat 2026 Guidelines: This significant fast, aimed at achieving everlasting marital joy, is celebrated on Jyeshtha Amavasya, which is the New Moon day in the month of Jyeshtha. In 2026, this observance will take place on Saturday, May 16th. According to the Panchang, the Amavasya Tithi will be in effect from 5:11 AM on May 16th until 1:30 AM on May 17th.

On this day, married women engage in fasting and worship the Vat Vriksha (Banyan tree), along with Goddess Savitri and Satyavan. This ritual is believed to bestow blessings for a joyful marital life. For those observing the Vat Savitri Vrat for the first time, adhering to specific guidelines is crucial to ensure the fast's spiritual benefits.

Rules for Observing Vat Savitri Vrat

**Guidelines for Vat Savitri Vrat**

1. If this is your first time fasting, rise during the *Brahma Muhurat* (the auspicious pre-dawn period) on Vat Savitri day and take a ritual bath. The *Brahma Muhurat* for this day is from 4:07 AM to 4:48 AM.

2. Women observing the fast should wear clothing in red, yellow, or orange hues. They may opt for their wedding attire or a new saree, and should also adorn themselves with *Solah Shringar* (the sixteen traditional bridal ornaments).

3. After bathing, make a solemn vow (*Sankalp*) to observe the Vat Savitri Vrat and prepare for the worship. Gather all necessary items for the *Puja* (worship ceremony).

4. The materials for the *Puja* should include a bamboo fan, raw cotton thread, soaked chickpeas, incense (*Dhup*), an oil lamp (*Deep*), cow's ghee, fresh flowers, seasonal fruits, traditional marital symbols (*Suhag* items) like *Sindoor* (vermilion), *Bindi*, bangles, Banyan tree fruits, and an image or idol of Goddess Savitri and Satyavan.

5. The primary focus of worship during this fast is the *Vat Vriksha*, regarded as a sacred tree and believed to house the Holy Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva).

6. Begin the worship by offering water to the roots of the Banyan tree. Then, wrap the raw cotton thread around the tree trunk. While circumambulating (*Parikrama*) the tree, wind the thread around it 7, 12, 51, or 108 times.

7. While walking around the tree, pray for your husband's longevity. During the worship, offer chickpeas, fruits, and flowers, and listen to the story of the Vat Savitri Vrat. Use the bamboo fan to fan the Banyan tree and then your husband.

8. The fast can be observed in two ways: as *Nirjala* (without water) or as *Phalahar* (consuming fruits). Choose the method that suits you or is customary in your family.

9. In some areas, after the worship, participants consume a bud from the Banyan tree along with a soaked chickpea, using water to assist.

10. After completing the worship, seek blessings from your mother-in-law and the elder women in your family.
