Essential Guidelines for Observing Solah Somvar Vrat During Sawan
Understanding Solah Somvar Vrat
Solah Somvar Vrat Rules: The sacred month of Sawan, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is approaching. This period is regarded as the most favorable and spiritually enriching for Shiva devotees. Throughout Sawan, various rituals such as special prayers, Rudrabhishek, and Jalabhishek (ritual bathing) are conducted at Shiva temples nationwide. Many devotees also embark on the Kanwar Yatra to bathe Lord Shiva with holy water.
It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva with genuine devotion during Sawan quickly earns Mahadev's favor and fulfills the desires of the devotees. A significant number of followers also initiate the 'Solah Somvar Vrat' (Sixteen Mondays Fast) during this sacred month, which is seen as a powerful and auspicious method to gain Lord Shiva's special blessings.
Observing the Solah Somvar Vrat with dedication during Shravan is thought to bring joy, prosperity, marital happiness, financial growth, and mental tranquility. However, certain important guidelines must be adhered to before starting this fast. Here are three key rules related to the Solah Somvar Vrat.
Start Date of Sawan This Year
This year, Sawan will commence on July 30, 2026, and will last until August 28, 2026.
First Monday of Sawan – August 3, 2026
Second Monday of Sawan – August 10, 2026
Third Monday of Sawan – August 17, 2026
Fourth Monday of Sawan – August 24, 2026
Taking the Vow (Sankalp)
Before embarking on the Solah Somvar Vrat, meditate on Lord Shiva and make a vow to observe the fast with complete devotion and sincerity. Once the vow is made, it is crucial to avoid discontinuing the fast without a valid reason.
Conduct Worship with Proper Rituals Every Monday
When you begin the Solah Somvar Vrat, perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva every Monday and offer Bel leaves, Datura, and other worship items. Additionally, recite the Solah Somvar Vrat Katha (story), perform Shiva Aarti, and chant Shiva mantras. Remember to conduct the *Udyapan* (concluding ritual) of the fast.
Upon completing all sixteen Mondays of fasting, the concluding ritual (*Udyapan*) should be performed with the appropriate rites on the 17th Monday. On this day, offer special worship to Lord Shiva, distribute *Prasad*, and engage in charitable acts as per your capacity.
