Understanding Thyroid Health

Thyroid disorders are increasingly common today, often linked to stress, irregular lifestyles, and hormonal fluctuations. The thyroid gland is vital for regulating metabolism, energy, and hormonal equilibrium. In addition to following medical advice and treatments, integrating yoga and *pranayama* (breathing techniques) into your daily life can be advantageous. Pooja, a yoga instructor at Mahadevan Yoga Studio, recommends several straightforward yoga exercises that can aid in balancing the body and breath, which is essential for managing thyroid issues. She emphasizes that consistent practice can promote relaxation and alleviate stress.

Yoga Poses for Thyroid Management

**Bridge Pose (*Setu Bandhasana*)**
To begin, lie on your back on a yoga mat. Bend your knees, keeping your feet flat on the floor, and grasp your ankles with your hands. Gradually lift your hips and chest. You should feel a gentle stretch in your neck and throat. Hold this position for 10 to 20 seconds while concentrating on your breath.

**Plough Pose (*Halasana*)**
Following the Bridge Pose, carefully lift your legs over your head, aiming to touch your toes to the ground if possible. This is known as *Halasana* (Plough Pose). Take your time with this pose and hold it only as long as you feel comfortable, ideally for 20 to 30 seconds.

**Camel Pose (*Ustrasana*)**
Next, transition into *Ustrasana*, or the Camel Pose. Keep a slight distance between your knees and reach back to grasp your heels. Arch your back while lifting your chest. Maintain steady breathing and aim to hold this pose for 20 to 30 seconds.

**Fish Pose (*Matsyasana*)**
For *Matsyasana* (Fish Pose), lie on your back and relax. Lift your chest and try to rest the crown of your head on the mat. You can either keep your hands close to your body or extend them above your head. It’s advisable to hold this pose for 20 to 30 seconds.

Breathing Techniques for Stress Relief

**Practice Ujjayi Pranayama**
After completing the asanas, take a moment to rest. Then, engage in Ujjayi Pranayama. In this technique, inhale and exhale through your nose with your mouth closed, creating a soft 'ha' sound from your throat while focusing on your breath. According to Pooja, this practice can effectively reduce stress and help regulate your breathing.
