Effective Tips for Storing Lentils at Home
The Importance of Lentils in Indian Cuisine
In Indian kitchens, lentils, known as *dal*, are a fundamental ingredient enjoyed throughout the year, regardless of the season. They play a crucial role in various regional dishes. As a result, households often stock up on different types such as *arhar* (split pigeon peas), *masoor* (red lentils), *chana* (split chickpeas), and *moong* (split green gram). However, keeping these lentils fresh for an entire year can be tricky due to their susceptibility to weevils and other pests.
Simple Remedies to Prevent Infestation
Utilizing Bay Leaves, Cloves, and Camphor
To safeguard lentils from pests, consider adding 2-3 bay leaves, 3-4 cloves, and 2-3 camphor tablets to your storage container. Instead of placing them directly in the lentils, wrap these items in a small cotton cloth or tissue paper and then put the bundle inside the container. This method prevents the lentils from absorbing the camphor's strong scent while effectively deterring insects.
Incorporating Neem Leaves
Neem leaves are renowned for their natural insect-repelling properties. To protect your lentils, simply add 5-6 neem leaves to the airtight container. Ensure that the leaves are completely dry if they have been washed, as moisture can lead to spoilage.
Using Garlic Cloves
The potent aroma of garlic can also help keep insects away. To implement this method, tie 4-5 dry garlic cloves in a small cotton bundle and place it inside the container with the lentils. This straightforward trick allows for safe storage of lentils for the entire year.
Choosing Airtight Containers
For optimal storage without additional remedies, it is crucial to use airtight containers. This prevents air and moisture from entering, significantly reducing the risk of pest infestations. Opt for high-quality containers made from plastic, steel, or glass.
Applying Mustard Oil
To enhance the preservation of lentils like *arhar*, *masoor*, *moong*, and *chana*, lightly coat them with mustard oil and sun-dry them. Use only a few drops of oil, rubbing it between your palms over the lentils before drying. After this process, store them in a suitable container.
