Durga Ashtami 2026: Dates, Auspicious Timings, and Significance
Understanding Durga Ashtami in March 2026
Chaitra Navratri has officially begun today, with the eighth day known as Durga Ashtami, or Mahashtami. This day is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Mahagauri, the eighth form of Mother Durga. Annually, Durga Ashtami is observed on the *Ashtami Tithi* (eighth lunar day) of the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing moon phase) in Chaitra month. This year, there is some uncertainty about whether the Chaitra Shukla Ashtami Tithi will be on March 25th or March 26th, as it spans two days.
Date of Durga Ashtami 2026
According to the *Panchang* (Hindu calendar), the Chaitra Shukla Ashtami Tithi will commence on Wednesday, March 25th, at 1:50 PM and will conclude on Thursday, March 26th, at 11:48 AM. Although the Tithi starts on the afternoon of March 25th, the sunrise during this period occurs on March 26th. Therefore, based on the *Udayatithi* (the lunar day at sunrise), Durga Ashtami is celebrated on Thursday, March 26th.
