When planning a pilgrimage to Jammu and Kashmir, many immediately think of Mata Vaishno Devi. However, just a stone's throw away lies a sacred site dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is essential for a complete spiritual experience. This site is known as Shivkhodi, or the "Cave of the Gods."
Shivkhodi: The Abode of Lord Shiva
Situated in the Reasi district of Jammu, this cave is truly remarkable. The term "Khodi" translates to cave, and it stretches about 200 meters in length. The cave's shape is said to resemble the drum of Lord Shiva. Although the entrance is quite narrow, it opens into a spacious chamber where devotees believe Lord Shiva resides.
The Legend of Bhasmasura
Local folklore tells of the demon Bhasmasura, who attempted to overpower Lord Shiva. To safeguard himself, Mahadev is said to have created this cave. A fierce confrontation took place between Mahadev and Bhasmasura, which ultimately ended with Lord Vishnu, disguised as Mohini, defeating the demon. The carvings within the cave serve as a testament to this legendary battle.
Natural Wonders Within the Cave
One of the most captivating aspects of Shivkhodi is the natural Shivalinga formed by limewater dripping from the cave's ceiling, creating a divine anointment. Additionally, visitors can observe carvings of Sheshnag, Ganesha, and Kartikeya adorning the cave walls, giving the impression that the entire celestial realm is encapsulated within.
A Pathway to the Divine?
Another intriguing aspect of this cave is its network of narrow passages. It is believed that one of these routes leads directly to the Amarnath cave, although these paths have been sealed off for safety reasons.

Shivkhodi is located about 70-80 kilometers from Katra. After your visit to Mata Vaishno Devi, you can easily reach this site by taxi or bus. While devotees frequent this location year-round, the experience during Mahashivratri is particularly special.
