Dimple Yadav: From Political Novice to Influential Leader

Recently, videos and images of Dimple Yadav participating in the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protests gained significant attention online. Clad in a soft pink cotton saree, the Samajwadi Party (SP) MP was seen providing aid to the injured, offering them water, and listening to their concerns. Dimple's political journey began in 2009 when she contested the Firozabad Lok Sabha by-election, stepping out from the shadow of her husband, Akhilesh Yadav, the SP chief. At that time, she was only 30 and cautiously navigated her political debut, often delivering brief speeches under her husband's mentorship while referring to herself as "beti" and "bahu." Unfortunately, she lost her first election to Congress's Raj Babbar.
In 2012, following Akhilesh's ascension to Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and his subsequent vacating of the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat, Dimple contested the by-election and was elected unopposed, marking a historic moment as the first woman from Uttar Pradesh to achieve this. Prior to this, she had already begun supporting Akhilesh during the 2012 UP Assembly elections. Akhilesh later revealed that during his absence, Dimple managed his Facebook account and engaged with followers. She successfully retained her seat in the 2014 general elections but faced defeat in 2019.
Despite being part of a prominent political family, Dimple's roots trace back to an Army background. Her father, Colonel Ram Chandra Singh Rawat, served in the Indian Army, leading to her upbringing in various cities such as Bathinda, Pune, and Lucknow. She graduated with a degree in Commerce from Lucknow University, where she first met Akhilesh Yadav.
There are differing accounts regarding the duration of Dimple and Akhilesh's courtship. Akhilesh has shared his apprehension about revealing his relationship with Dimple to his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, and credited his grandmother for convincing his father to accept their union. Their marriage, which took place on November 24, 1999, was an inter-caste ceremony held in Akhilesh's hometown of Saifai, attended by numerous political figures and celebrities. The couple is blessed with three children: Aditi, Arjun, and Tina.
Over a decade into her political career, Dimple has carved out her own identity as a formidable political figure. She has become one of the most recognizable leaders of the Samajwadi Party. In May 2016, she delivered her first speech in the Lok Sabha, which, despite some stumbles, garnered significant attention. Today, she is recognized for her articulate speeches in Parliament and her elegant saree choices.
During the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Dimple emerged as a key campaigner for the Samajwadi Party, attracting larger crowds than many established politicians. Her participation in the rath yatra alongside Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi in Varanasi drew considerable public interest. Although she lost the Kannauj seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, she made a comeback by winning the Mainpuri Lok Sabha by-election after the passing of Mulayam Singh Yadav, marking her second consecutive term in Parliament.
When a cleric made derogatory remarks about her last year, Dimple commented on the NDA's response, stating, "It's good that action is being taken now. But it would have been better if similar protests and support had been visible when horrifying incidents like the one in Manipur came to light through footage on social media. Back then, if people had stood together the way they are now over the Operation Sindoor issue, it would have shown genuine concern."
Dimple's political approach is characterized by measured rhetoric, open communication, and a focus on engaging with local communities. Outside of her political endeavors, she is an enthusiastic equestrian, having participated in various riding competitions. Additionally, she is a fan of Metallica, enjoys painting, and is an avid reader who cherishes late-night coffee outings with family and friends.
