Delicious and Nutritious Recipes for Karwa Chauth
Karwa Chauth Food Ideas
Karwa Chauth Food Recipes: The observance of Karwa Chauth involves a day-long fast without water, which is concluded only after the moon is sighted and rituals are performed. It’s crucial to choose wisely what to eat when breaking this fast. While many women may indulge in fried snacks like *puri* or *kachori*, along with sweets or spicy dishes, opting for a lighter and more nutritious meal is advisable after such a long period without food. You don’t need to splurge on expensive ingredients; you can create delightful dishes using common staples from your kitchen, such as lentils (*dal*), rice, yogurt, and vegetables. Let’s look at some meal options you can prepare once the moon is visible on Karwa Chauth.
Dal-Chawal (Lentils and Rice)
Dal-Chawal (Lentils and Rice)
If you appreciate traditional Indian cuisine, *dal-chawal* is a fantastic option for breaking your fast. Lentils are rich in essential amino acids, while rice provides carbohydrates, together forming a complete protein source for your body.
Ingredients
1 bowl Arhar (Toor) Dal (split pigeon peas)
1 bowl Rice
4 bowls Water (adjusted for lentils and rice)
Turmeric and salt to taste
For the *tadka* (tempering): Ghee or oil, cumin seeds, asafoetida (*hing*), green chilies, chopped onion, and optional tomato.
Preparation Method
Wash the lentils and rice thoroughly in clean water (either separately or together) 2–3 times.
In a pressure cooker, mix the lentils, water (about 3 bowls), turmeric, and salt. Cook until you hear 3–4 whistles.
Prepare the rice by boiling it in a pot or pressure-cooking it for 1 whistle, then set aside.
In a pan, heat some ghee or oil. Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, chopped green chilies, onion, and tomato, and sauté until golden brown.
Combine this *tadka* with the cooked lentils. Serve the dal over hot rice, accompanied by pickle or salad.
Moong Dal Khichdi
Moong Dal Khichdi
This dish is a great choice for breaking a fast. Its soft texture and minimal spices make it easy to digest.
Ingredients
1 cup hulled (skinned) moong dal
1 cup rice
1/2 cup chopped mixed vegetables
1 medium tomato, 1 chopped green chili
1/2 tsp ginger paste, 1/4 tsp garam masala
2 dried red chilies, 1 tsp whole spices (khade masale)
3 tbsp ghee, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp red chili powder, salt to taste
1/2 tsp cumin seeds, 1/8 tsp asafoetida (hing)
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
Preparation Method
To make moong dal masala khichdi, wash the moong dal and rice thoroughly and set aside.
Heat ghee in a pressure cooker, add the whole spices, then the vegetables, and sauté.
Add the rice, moong dal, and water to the cooker, then pressure cook until done.
Separately, heat ghee in a pan, add cumin seeds and asafoetida, then stir in the tomato, green chili, turmeric powder, salt, red chili powder, ginger paste, and garam masala; cook briefly.
Mix the khichdi with this mixture and cook for about 10 minutes.
Adjust the khichdi's consistency to your liking. Serve with yogurt (curd) on the side.
Kadhi Chawal
Kadhi Chawal
This dish is made with yogurt or buttermilk and gram flour (besan), which helps promote the growth of probiotics in the gut, aiding digestion.
Ingredients
2 cups yogurt or buttermilk, 3–4 tbsp gram flour/besan, turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt, water, and extra gram flour for making fritters. Ghee or oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, asafoetida (hing), curry leaves, dried red chilies, and finely chopped onion, garlic, and ginger.
1 glass of rice, 1.5 to 2 glasses of water, and a bit of cumin seeds.
Preparation Method
In a large bowl, whisk the yogurt and gram flour until smooth and lump-free.
Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and enough water to create a thin batter.
Heat ghee or oil in a pan or kadhai. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, and dried red chilies.
Add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger, and sauté lightly.
Pour the yogurt-gram flour mixture into this tempering and bring to a boil, stirring continuously.
Once boiling, reduce heat and let simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
Prepare gram flour fritters and add them to the kadhi; cook on low heat for another 5 minutes to allow the fritters to absorb the flavors.
Finally, add salt and garam masala.
In a pressure cooker or pot, heat ghee and add cumin seeds; then add the rinsed rice and water. Cook until 2 whistles (if using a pressure cooker) or boil until the rice is cooked.
Serve the kadhi and fritters over hot rice, topped with a little ghee or an extra tempering, and enjoy with pickles and papad.
A Bowl of Yogurt and Seasonal Fruits
A Bowl of Yogurt and Seasonal Fruits
If you prefer a lighter option after your fast, consider preparing a bowl of fresh fruits mixed with yogurt. Use bananas, apples, pomegranates, and fresh yogurt. Chop the fruits into small pieces and combine them with the yogurt, avoiding added sugar. This choice is particularly suitable for those who prefer not to eat heavy meals right after breaking a fast. If yogurt causes any discomfort, feel free to skip it.
