Delicious and Nutritious Jowar Upma Recipe to Try
Discover a Healthy Twist on Upma
If you're tired of the usual semolina (rava) upma, it's time to explore a healthier and tastier alternative. Upma made with jowar (sorghum) is not only flavorful but also packed with health benefits.
Jowar is a gluten-free grain that is abundant in fiber, protein, and vital minerals. It helps maintain a light and energetic feeling throughout the day. Let’s dive into the recipe for jowar upma.
Ingredients
1 cup jowar rava (coarsely ground jowar/sorghum)
1 small onion (finely chopped)
1–2 green chilies (chopped)
1/2 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, beans)
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
8–10 curry leaves
1 tablespoon oil
Salt to taste
2 cups water
Lemon juice (optional)
Preparation Method
Begin by dry-roasting the jowar rava in a pan until the raw scent fades and a pleasant aroma emerges.
In a kadhai, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they start to pop, incorporate cumin seeds, curry leaves, and green chilies. Next, add the onions and sauté until they turn a light pink.
Introduce the chopped vegetables and sauté for 2–3 minutes until they soften. Then, add water and salt.
When the water reaches a boil, gradually stir in the roasted jowar rava, ensuring to mix continuously to avoid lumps.
Lower the heat, cover the pan, and let the upma simmer for 5–7 minutes. Once the jowar rava has absorbed the water and is fully cooked, turn off the heat. Optionally, add a squeeze of lemon juice and mix gently.
What sets jowar upma apart? This dish is high in fiber, which aids digestion and keeps you satiated longer. It's also a fantastic choice for those aiming to shed some pounds. The iron and antioxidants present in jowar provide a boost of energy.
