Chennai Corporation to Revitalize 41 Ponds with ₹119 Crore Investment
Restoration Plans for North Chennai Ponds
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced an initiative to rejuvenate 41 ponds situated in the North Chennai regions of Thiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, and Tondiarpet, with an estimated budget of ₹119.12 crore.
The restoration efforts will encompass desilting, deepening, reinforcing bunds, and erecting retaining walls. The Manali zone will witness the most extensive work, focusing on 28 ponds with a projected cost of ₹58.43 crore. In Thiruvottiyur, four ponds are set for restoration at an estimated cost of ₹28.9 crore.
In Madhavaram, four ponds will be revitalized with a budget of ₹11 crore, while Tondiarpet will receive ₹20.97 crore for five projects.
Additionally, the GCC is managing five more pond restoration projects directly, with a budget of ₹25.25 crore sourced from its capital fund. The corporation has also introduced four new ponds in the Guindy area, designed to hold 2.28 lakh cubic meters of water to help mitigate flooding.
