Chaturmas 2026: Key Dates and Significance
Chaturmas 2026 Start Date
Chaturmas begins on Devshayani Ekadashi, which occurs on the Ekadashi tithi (the eleventh day) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Ashadha. This day marks the commencement of Chaturmas, a period during which no auspicious events such as weddings, engagements, housewarming ceremonies, or tonsure rituals are conducted. The Chaturmas period concludes with Devutthana Ekadashi, after which these ceremonies can resume. Let’s explore the start date of Chaturmas.
Start of Chaturmas 2026
According to the Vedic calendar, the Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi tithi begins at 09:12 AM on Friday, July 24, and lasts until 11:34 AM on Saturday, July 25. Based on the *Udaya Tithi* (the sunrise tithi), Devshayani Ekadashi is observed on July 25, marking the official start of Chaturmas on this date.
Months Covered by Chaturmas
The Chaturmas period includes the days from Ekadashi to Purnima (full moon) of the Ashadha month, followed by the months of Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashvina, and Kartika.
Conclusion of Chaturmas 2026
Chaturmas ends on Devutthana Ekadashi, also referred to as Dev-Utthan Ekadashi. This day falls on the Ekadashi tithi of the bright fortnight in Kartika. This year, the Kartika Shukla Ekadashi tithi will be observed from 7:15 AM on November 20 until 6:31 AM on November 21. Therefore, Chaturmas will conclude on Friday, November 20.
Why Are Auspicious Activities Suspended During Chaturmas?
On the first day of Chaturmas, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, the Preserver of the Universe, enters a state of *Yog Nidra* (divine slumber) in *Patala Loka* (the netherworld). During this time, the deities also fall into a slumber for four months. They awaken on Dev Uthani Ekadashi when Lord Vishnu emerges from his cosmic sleep. Since the deities must be awake for any auspicious activities to occur, ceremonies such as weddings, housewarming rituals, *Mundan* (tonsure ceremonies), engagements, and *Janeu* (sacred thread) ceremonies are paused throughout the four months of Chaturmas.
